According to the "Good Book" she was. It's all up to belief and interpretation. People have told me that the Bible is a good storybook. I guess it depends on you and your beliefs.

Yes, she was a virgin, but not what we consider a virgin today. How old are you, have you had any college, yet? The reason I ask is because in all of my classes (most - like english or humanities) they say never to take a word in the contemporary context; that is, words today had different meanings back then. A misinterpretation if a word in those classes led to wrong responses on tests. Do you catch my drift? If you don't, what I want you to do is find the oldest dictionary you can find - look up the word virgin and read the FIRST definition ...Remember, this has to be the OLDEST dictionary you can find so do some digging, ok? Now, the word "virgin" simply means a woman that was not married, a maiden. Now I ask, does that have anything to do with sex and having Jesus without sex? I am just being logical and most Christians refuse to be intelligent, they just want to swallow whatever is spoon fed to them without thinking and doing a bit of research. As far as the meaning of "virgin", am I right or am I wrong?
So, people are just stupid if you ask me, and God said what he said, so-called Christ-followers just want to put their own generational meanings to them. I hope that helped you - Mary was a virgin alright, just NOT what it means to us today.
Please, let me know what you think, respond to me at brielle83@yahoo.com (e-mail), you call also IM me at that same address.
Looking to hear from you,
Good Luck!

Yes - in the sense that whatever's written about a character in a story is 'true' for them. Actually the original text calls her a 'maiden' (young woman) and not specifically a virgin - but the implication is pretty clear. We won't get into the traditional penalty for knocking up someone's betrothed because God can break His own rules.
Now, if we're talking about a real historical person - who knows? There isn't enough reliable information outside the Gospels, which are inherently biased. It wouldn't be the first time a young lady cheated on her fiance' - or got raped - and didn't say anything until the bambino arrived. Joseph must have been a very understanding guy.

I am glad that many responses point to the Bible (more correctly, the New Testament) as a source of support for this belief. But I would also like to point out that the miracle birth is also part of the Islamic faith and is discussed in the Quran. My point is that this is not solely a Christian belief.
I think that it is also important to note that Mary and Joseph had other children; so Jesus likely had siblings. But the Church, in order to continue to sactify the belief in the Virgin birth, often eradicated any references to and knowledge of them and denies even the possibility. For more information, watch the documentary "The Real Family of Jesus" on the Discovery channel.
P.S. Some of the responses to this question are rather disturbing.

She was a virgin when the angel appeared to her telling her that she was carrying Jesus.
Joseph was her HUSBAND. Joseph was not allowed to have intercourse with Mary until after Christ's birth.
So yeah, Mary IS NOT an ever-lasting virgin.

Yes, I very much think so. The fact that you would doubt God's word,is scary. I know that what my lord Jesus Christ say, is true, and God put Jesus ther, because he knew that Mary would do what was right, and let him go. The 3 kings right after Jesus' birth brought forth gifts. Gold , Frankinsice, and Myr. So you think that all this is just a lie. Well that is a lot of lies written a lot of places in the bible.I hope you figure out the truth before it is to late.

I find it interesting that previous posters' answered saying that she didn't want to get into trouble so she made up the whole immaculate conception thing.
Well, here's the problem. No one but Joseph knew about it for a long time, and after all, she WAS married. Joseph had the right to divorce her, but decided to keep her as his wife anyway. Now, would he have done that if he thought for any reason that she was lying about the conception? Also, he was visited by an angel himself and told the truth.
So if her own husband believes her, who are you to question otherwise?

No. I think she was banging Roger the Lodger, got knocked up, and made up the story about the Holy Spirit to keep from getting stoned to death.
Here's something to think about... Jesus was declared to be of the blood-line of David. How could that be? The blood-line of David was on Joseph's side of the family... mot Mary's. How could Jesus be of the blood-line of David if he was conceived by the Holy Ghost, and not Joseph? Just another one of the many errors and inconsistencies in the Wholly Babble.

She's not "that Virgin Mary".. She's OUR VIRGIN MARY... I hope you'll respect HER the way that we do whatever you're belief is. She hasn't done anything to hurt you. So you might as well leave her alone.

This qualifies as mythology. And why is it so important? She had other children after Jesus (he had brothers at least, James and one other). Does this make her less important or holy? From the very beginning Christians sought to make Jesus totally unlike anyone before him - a miraculous, one time only person. Let them dream. Real people know that contraception requires sperm and an ovum.
