The word "Messiah" is an English rendering of the Hebrew word "Mashiach", which means "Anointed." It usually refers to a person initiated into God's service by being anointed with oil. (Exodus 29:7, I Kings 1:39, II Kings 9:3)
Since every King and High Priest was anointed with oil, each may be referred to as "an anointed one" (a Mashiach or a Messiah). For example: "God forbid that I [David] should stretch out my hand against the Lord's Messiah [Saul]..." (I Samuel 26:11. Cf. II Samuel 23:1, Isaiah 45:1, Psalms 20:6)
Where does the Jewish concept of Messiah come from? One of the central themes of Biblical prophecy is the promise of a future age of perfection characterized by universal peace and recognition of God. (Isaiah 2:1-4; Zephaniah 3:9; Hosea 2:20-22; Amos 9:13-15; Isaiah 32:15-18, 60:15-18; Micah 4:1-4; Zechariah 8:23, 14:9; Jeremiah 31:33-34)
Many of these prophetic passages speak of a descendant of King David who will rule Israel during the age of perfection. (Isaiah 11:1-9; Jeremiah 23:5-6, 30:7-10, 33:14-16; Ezekiel 34:11-31, 37:21-28; Hosea 3:4-5)
Since every King is a Messiah, by convention, we refer to this future anointed king as The Messiah. The above is the only description in the Bible of a Davidic descendant who is to come in the future. We will recognize the Messiah by seeing who the King of Israel is at the time of complete universal perfection.

The Jew believe that Jesus was a great profit, but not the Messiah, because he did not liberate the Jewish people. The Jews were under Imperial Roman control at the time and they believe that the true Messiah would have liberated them from Roman rule. They are still waiting for the Messiah. Their Messiah would liberate the Jewish people and return them to the land that was promised to Moses by the Lord.

Read "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Judaism" and it will make perfect sense.
The Jews were looking for someone like Alexander the Great to free them from Roman rule - a military genius who would have God on his side. Jesus repeatedly said that his kingdom was not of this Earth. Also, Jesus was a pacifist. In addition, his celibacy disqualified him not only from being the Messiah but also from being a rabbi, which is why Jews don't even regard him as a prophet. Jesus said many things that were and are startling to Jews, things that were totally outside the tradition.

Jesus was given a bad rap through out history when "christians" persecuted the jews so it is difficult for them to even look credibley upon Jesus as the Messiah. Just as it is hard for us to believe that muslims are good people after the act of 9/11. With reference to the Zechariah prophecy that has not taken place yet.
The orthadox jews are waiting for Him to be the victorious one and they will be right this time.

The number one reason is because he didn't restore the land of Israel to being self governed without being ruled from another land.
Jesus didn't do that... and that was the original purpose of the messiah, not salvation for human kind. That was created by christians MUCH later.
If Jesus had actually been the Hebrew Messiah, the United Nations wouldn't have had to do his work in 1949.

Jews don't believe that Jesus ben Joseph was the moshiach of prophesy because he does not fulfill the following "benchmarks" or a checklist that the moshiach must fulfill, JbJ only did one or two:
1. He must be a Jew, Deuteronomy 17.15, Numbers 24.17
2. He must be a member of the House of David ben Yishai in the male line. I Chronicles 17.11, Psalms 89.29-38, Jeremiah 33.17, II Samuel 7.12-16
3. He must be a descendant of Solomon ben David. I Chron 22.10, 28.7, II Chron 7.18
4. He must gather the Children of Israel from the Diaspora. Isaiah 11.12, 27.12-13
5. He must influence the world to worship G-d. Isaiah 11.9, 40.5, Ezekiel 37.24-28, Zephaniah 3.9
6. He must rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. Michah 4.1
7. He must bring world peace Isaiah 2.4, 11.6, Michah 4.3
To date NO-ONE has fulfilled all of these prophesies and for this reason, Jews do not recognize Jesus ben Joseph as the moshiach of prophecy.

in other word you are saying the Jews believe He was the messiah? Your question says the Jews don't believe Jesus was NOT the messiah. In other words you are saying they believe He was. That is not true and as to the reason, they, like a lot of people today, just close their eyes to the truth.

Christianity came after Judaism... I think that the Jews who did believe Christ was the Messiah became Christians!
Muslims have Messiahs Christians don't have because they came from Christians.

All of the things the House of Israel were taught were to lead them to the coming of a Messiah. They were given many practices, ordinances, and commandments to prepare them. Through the years, they just forgot the purpose of those ordinances. However, the Jewish people of today should not be punished for the choices of their fathers. Every individual has his own right to choose.

They don't believe Christ was the Messiah, because they believe Jesus was just a prophet ...not the son of God. They don't take that saying to heart like the christians.
I actually don't know how they explain that saying.
