It really depends on how fast you learn and your dedication. If you work really hard at it... You could have the basics down in a few months... But if you want to take it casually and try not to rush than it coulod take up to four or five years. Hopefully you're a fast learner or somewhere in between, but once you have the basics, branching off isn't too difficult and the frustration is already behind you. Than you're ready to speak fluently.

It took me about 2 years to speak it fluently. I am of hispanic decent but my father was in the military so we moved around a lot and my parents spoke to each other in spanish but never taught us. Believe it or not, I learned by listening to music and writing the words. Now I speak it better than my parents. I can speak it, write it and read it. It's a beautiful language and the music is even more beautiful. The music is sung from the heart.
I would recommend a cd by Ana Gabriel named " serie tesoros musicales." I'm listening to it right now!

omg.. i have been trying to learn on my own for about 2 months. I love the language and the people.. one of my daughters was learning while abroad on a year holiday.. she had intensive learning and still isn't very good, i might add she is very intelligent as well. It's hard I think you must live there to really learn. Good Luck!

well. learn spanish is kinda hard, u know, like instead of saying:
I think
he/she/it thinks
you think
we think
they think
u should say:
yo pienso
el/ella p[iensa
tu piensas
nosotros pensamos
ellos piensan,
as u can see, every pronoun has a different way to say the verb, also, the past has a lot of variation, and the future too
there are no auxiliars, especifically u should change the verb to wut u wanna say..
so, i say 3 hard-workin years

hmm a good year of intense training in a country should suffice.
