what do mormons beleive?

i have heard so much condemming mormons. but i have heard so muck praising them. i want your personal opinion, not a list of what others beleive or what you have heard.

I have read through several responses and I have seen that wide variety of responses. I am cluessless why Mormons/LDS keep coming up as a topic on today's list. Sadly, most people go by hearsay. I have seen people lump ideas from Christian Scientist, Jehovah Witnesses, Seven Day Adventist, etc. all together and not be able to separate who believes what. I have also seen some very prejudiced statements on the list as well.

If I had to put things in a nutshell, I would say: Mormons are Christians. The name of the Church is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. We believe that Christ did not end the line of Prophets, but only He is the Messiah and salvation comes only through Him. Most Churches are looking for a "falling away" before Christ's second coming. We believe it was called the Dark Ages and many truths of the Gospel were lost.

If you have ever studied any Bible history, you know that not all scriptures were included to compile the Bible. We do believe in additional scriptures and modern revelation. We use the Book of Mormon in addition to the Bible. We see it as a history of part of the Native Americans and it does not contradict the Bible. (The usual anti Mormon argument is a passage in Revelations talking about adding and taking away from the Bible . . . a similar passage is in Exodus.)

All I know is I explored a lot of Churches. I have a better relationship with Christ and have learned more about how to be a Christain in this Church than any other Christian Church I have ever had involvement with over the years.

The real name of their Church is 'The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints'(This would mean they are Christians)

Mormons believe in God, our Heavenly Eternal Father, (that would make us all an eternal family) and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.

Faith and Repentance are their main or first basic principles.

They believe that men are punished for their own sins and not for original sin and the sins of others.

They don't think that any person can give himself Gods authority. they have to be called by God through a linked chain of priesthood.

Also that we can only be saved through the atonement of Jesus Christ and obedience to commandments.

Their church is set up as close as possible to the primitive church of Christ(with Prophets, apostles, teachers, evangalists etc.)

One of their beliefs I respect is that they say everyone should be allowed to worship God "according to the dictates of our own conscience" that people can go where, how and what they truely believe.

They believe that having the pure love of Christ in ones heart and mind is one of the (if not the) greatest virtues.

They believe in the Bible

They also belive in the Book of Mormon(that's where the nickname 'Mormons' comes from) The book is a lot like the bible (I've read most of both) But, instead of being about the people in Jerusalum it's about the people in the Americas around the time of Christ.

They believe that any vice is something one should stay away from.

They don't drink beer etc., no smoking or drugs, no premarital sex. They discourage cussing, violence, looking down on others, hurting others.

They believe in continuing revelations and miracles and angels and visions and prophecy.

They believe we made the conscience choice to come to earth and experience good and evil, dark and light, pleasure and pain so we could more fully learn and appriciate the contrasts and make the choice to do good out of free will.

They obviously believe in following the laws of whatever country they live in.

They believe family, eternal and earthly, is the most important unit there is.

Some people still think Mormons practice polygamy but they don't.

People of every religious persuasion deserve respect. For that matter, people of no religious persuasion do, also.

I'm not a member of the Church of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons), but I am familiar with the belief system. Like all other religions that support a belief in the supernatural, I don't agree with them, but I don't belittle them.

For all I know, the Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Taoists, Protestants, and Santerias might be right. I just don't buy into the concept. But I neither condemn nor praise a person for what she or he believes. However, I do resent it if they insist on pressing their religion onto me.

The cult of Joseph Smith, swindler and charlatan, who referred to his own followers as dupes. Joseph Smith born 1805 known to his neighbors as an untruthful, trouble making boy, given to pretended feats of magic and digging for buried treasure. At twenty-one was hauled into court as a disorderly person and impostor, pretended that an angel named Moroni sent by god revealed to him a sacred book written on gold plates, that he found in a stone box with a sword and breast plate. He pretended to have dictated the contents without unwrapping the plates, which only passages that possess any dignity are borrowings from the King James Bible, when pressured to produce these plates Smith said they were taken back to heaven. Smith was murdered in 1844 in an Illinois jail when he was thirty-nine being held for burning down the press of a newspaper that printed articles about him that he didn’t care for.

I am a Mormon.

There are so many things that we believe that it's hard to even scratch the surface. Here are a few.

It's always easier to attack another person's beliefs than it is to defend them. And that is especially true with the HUGE number of beliefs.

There are several different break-offs, but the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the largest, and that's the one I'm talking about.

We believe in Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ and that we can only be saved through Him, and in the Holy Ghost. We believe that God is a just and fair God. We believe in Faith in Christ, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost We believe in the Bible, although we think the Bible has been altered through its many translations. We believe in the Book of Mormon, which is an account of God's dealings with the ancient Americans. We believe that we can be guilded by revelation. We believe miracles still happen. We believe that people should allow other people to believe the way they want to believe. We believe in the second coming of Jesus Christ.
We believe strongly in the importance of Families. We believe in being good people, working to help others, being kind, honest, virtuous, faithful, hopeful. We do not have a paid ministry.

Some of our more controversial beliefs are these:
We believe that we are son's and daughters of our Heavenly Father, that he loves us and that we can be heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ to become like our God our Father.
We believe that God has sactioned people to practice polygamy under rare situations, but does has not sactioned people to practice polygamy for some time.
There have been times that God did not allow certain people access to the priesthood due to their liniage, but does no longer has those restrictions.
Women can not hold the priesthood, but the priesthood can only be used by men to perform acts of service to others.
We believe that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost are three distinct personages, each separate, but having exactly the same will and purpose.
We believe that Jesus Christ reestablished his Church back to Earth the same as it was established during Christ's mortal ministry, through the prophet Joseph Smith in 1830 in preparation for his second coming.

10. We believe in the literal gathering of Isreal, and in the restoration of the ten tribes; that Zion will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and that the earth will be renewed and receive it's paridisical glory.
11. We claim the priviledge of worshipping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow men the same priveledge, let them worship how, where, or what they may.
12. We believe in being subjects to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.
13. We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed we may say, that we follow the admonition of Paul-we believe all things, we hope all things, we have indured many things, and hope to be able to indure all things. If there is anything virtuos, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

Don't let others condemn the Mormons, they are fab people and I have met quite a few as I used to be a practising Mormon.. but alas, don't believe in anything these days. World events, children being hurt, death and the human race have all scarred me for life. What a life they promise you, its full, rich and not for me as I like my coffee, swear sometimes, drink sometimes... haha.. life is good! Best be in USA tho' to practise..

They believe in the same bible as the Christians, we have just found sort of the next part? I don't know how to describe it.
They believe that it is actions, not religion that gets someone into heaven.

we belive in God the father and in his son jesus christ and in the holy ghost. we believe that man is resposible for his sins and not adam's transgression. We believe that Christ is our Savior, that only through him are we saved. We believe that He took upon him our transgressions, he died and rose from the grave. We focus more on the atonment, and the rising from the grave. That is why we don't have crosses. We don't down play what he suffered, its just He is alive, and He loves us. To him what he suffered was so fleeting. He wants us to love him, to serve him, and to have joy. We believe in the bible as long as it is translated correctly, we believe that the book of mormon is another source for the word of God. We believe that our church mirrors the original church that was set up during Christ's time. I know that I teach that we do not claim to have all of the answers right now, but we hope for all things, and we have a prophet who is a living prophet, he guides us and leads us, we strongly believe in free agency.

They are people who uphold good values and believe in Christian salvation... I know a few and they are quite, how to put it - totally normal. So, they believe in one God, but with a bunch of twists... big ones. I just can't ever buy into their beliefs about the second coming to native indians and "seer stones" and prophets declaring things like coffee and tea off limits. It's a little too weird. But you have to admire their spirit of community and family values. They really take ministry seriously. Like I said, nice people, believe in same God as most - lots of things similar, but some things make you wonder "what the ???"
