My chihuahua has been inside all day, and i think he got into some dust. He has been shaking his head constantly, not scratching his ears, but rubbing them on anything soft when he gets the chance. Taking a closer look, it appears they have some sort of rash or allergic reaction, which I can only imagine is from the dusty floor he got into (he was under the couch). What can I do to remedy this? Will it just go away, or do I need to get him to a vet?

My dog has allergies and he rubs his ears a lot too.

My advice would be to take him to the vet as it could be allergies, an infection, mites, or something else. The rash suggests to me that it's a reaction to something or an infection. Untreated infections from yeast or other viruses or bacteria can cause other problems including loss of hearing.

I know it's the weekend and hard to get into the vet. Try looking up emergency vet clinics (look under veterinarians) in your local phone book. Most will have someone you can describe the rash to and they can advise you on what to do (either come in, treat at home, or treat at home and see your vet on Monday).

If you think it is an allergic reaction wash doggies ears out with a warm washcloth and put a SMALL amount of hydrocordizone(sp?) on it's ear just keep it away from the ear canal. If not better by Monday a call to the vet wouldn't hurt they maybe able to give you something without taking the dog in.
If there is dark matter in the ear, you may need to get a flash light out to really look in it's ear and ear canal. Then it probably is ear mites. Wal-Mart sells ear mite medicine in the pet department.

Going to the vet is never a bad idea, but until tomorrow, you could clean the dog's ears out with lukewarm water and a Q-tip. Just MAKE SURE not to swab inside the ear canal. Cleaning the ears might temporarily relieve the itch until you see a vet. I wouldn't wait more than 48-72 hours to see a vet if it persists. I do find it odd that dust would bring on such a reaction though. Well, good luck!

You need to take him to a vet. My pit bull puppy did that a few months back and it turned out to be a yeast infection in his ears. Some ear drops for 10 days took care of it.

It may be that he has ear mites. Take a little mineral water and a q tip and gently wash the outer ear do not go deep into the ear. Maybe call your vet for some ear mite medication.

I have a CHI too, and with what the vet just charged me for fleas (!) I would first take him/her with you to Petco or an Pet store for an affordable remedy, before running to the vet. They have a lot of knowledgeable people working there.
