Yes, some dogs eat dirt. Not usually very much but they do and it's pretty normal... Apparently it does something they need but I can't remember what off the top of my head... That's also why they eat grass... My dogs have done it for years and are fine... Only worry if he eats a lot of it often; then it would time to see the vet...

dogs normaly eat dirt and grass when there stomac fells bad and if they do it to much they get a tape worm go to your vet
