You have just asked the question of the ages. What you are told by your local minister is mostly non helpful. Let's cover all the reasons I have heard which are wrong.
We are here to learn We came here from the seat of all knowledge to a relatively primitive existence to learn? Hardly. We are here to experience that which we already know. I like to use the story of Dr. Pushagain, the world famous Obstetrician. Dr Pushagain has delivered 2,453 1/2 babies. Dr. Pushagain knows more about child birth than anyone on earth. There is only one thing he doesn't know, he doesn't know what it feels like to give birth. We are Dr. Pushagain.
This is not a commercial because i have no connection with Walsch but I would recommend his five book series, Conversation with GOD, Friendship with GOD and Communion with GOD. They are beautiful because unlike the bible and all sermons, there are no contradictions. I said we would cover all the resons but I must go. More later if needed.

We exist to continue to prove the 'theory' of natural selection via survival of the fittest, as follows:
The repeated examples of the creation of new species due to beneficial mutation are best illustrated when initial geographic isolation from a 'united' group_ is followed by a massive dose of time.
A Sad aside...
We will, however, not always exist - for (unfortunately) exactly the same reason, if something totally dumb and environmentally crushing isn't initiated 'sooner' by some stupid idea, method of living, or item of mankinds.
An unfortunate side effect of our current status as 'top of the pyramid' (which is, I believe, a general assumption that we make... we assume we are superior to animals, and they inferior to us, but it's all just a matter of timing, we are 'currently' dominant, but will not always be so), is that humanity seems so utterly blind to the fact that we have so many positive choices we could make for the world, and it's healthy longevity.
Instead we probably spend billions of dollars talking about ideas that will begin to take effect 'in 70+ years' (and patting ourselves on the backs for them), or they simply never come to fruition. In the meantime we are speeding up the decay of the environmental conditions we NEED to sustain for a biologically and chemically balanced planet (or at least enough to sustain what we love, including ourselves.
A pathetic 'I told you so' won't cut it when my great-great-great grandchildren are alive.

God has our lives all planned out. He created us in our mommys
tummy. We are all special and contribute to life in one way or another. That means we all got a special talent. God game us this talent to use for the betterment of man. We exist because he made us. I hope I helped! I know you may not beleive in God but I do and it makes perfect sense to me.

I prefer to live and not exist. Having an understanding of God/Jesus is very important. And we should be concerned about other humans.

To serve God. He created us and came down to our level after we tried to run from him. He has given us chance upon chance upon chance, but He never gave up on us. That is why we must serve Him.
