It's funny how some are offended by a question, and answer badly. They need more research and are probably scared.

I really think that every American citzen should have to participate in the government in some form.

I know that Swiss law requires compulsory participation in civil defense for all males aged 20 to 60 with exemption only for military service. Consequently, most of the civil defense personnel are over 50. There is presently a mandatory five-day introductory course and two days of annual training. This seems to working well for one of the most peaceul nations in the world.

The concept Heinlein put forth in "Starship Troopers" was also a good one. You do not have to serve but certain rights such as voting (and in his book kids, but that is a bit much) are denied to those who do not serve.

I also think it should count as "service" if you participate on the level of City Councilperson, or work in your local government. I was astounded at what I didn't understand about how my city government functions. It has been an eye opener to work in government to say the least.

I think we are going to have to do something. Hell we won't even vote!!

I believe there should be a draft but under the following circumstances. Two years mandatory service with added incentives to re-enlist for an additional two years. Exclusions for registered college students or hardship cases. Provide additional pay or signup incentives if a person signs up and volunteers for a three or four year tour of duty and allow that person to specify the branch of service they want.

I would also hope they would build up the Coast Guard as right now there are more police officers in New York City than there are Coast Guard members for the whole United States.

One reason I think the draft is important is that the military serves a very important job and provides great training and benefits and a draft would also provide a trained reservoir of solders if something happened that required a fast callup of troops. I don't think it's fair to always jerk men and women away from their jobs and families just because they are in the reserves and use them as regular forces. I do think in the event of major war yes dip into the reserves but that should be the last alternative rather than the first and due to not having a sufficient reserve of trained fighting forces we now call the reserves up first and that's not fair to families whose father or mother have been working for many years and whose families depend on that constant paycheck for their existence and holding on to the house and car etc.

Essential that everyone knows what the reasons would be for doing so. Drafts should be enacted only when it is in the commonality of uniting for that common purpose.

If you have no plans, you can join the Army and get a great education and have a foreseeable future. You don't have to put this question out there, if everyone did do some service, then people would be more humble about how their lives affect others.

I would imagine that the vast majority of people who support a draft are either in the military or are in some way exempt from the selective service. I'm in the army, and I do not feel that there should be a draft for these reasons:

1. I've encountered enough dirtbags who volunteered for this. I couldn't fathom working with someone who was forced to be here.

2. If we started a draft, all those who protest the military would finally have a valid reason to do so. It's much more interesting to watch them protest an all-volunteer force.

3. We live in America, the land of the free. If you want to sit in your parents' basement for your whole life, you should be allowed to do that.

There is actually no need for a draft. Every branch is meeting their monthly quotas, so it's not really an issue..... right now. That's how the draft went anyways- you could only opt out of the draft it you were going to college, vocational school, etc. or enlisting (or officer.) But serving with a bunch of people who *don't* want to be there is a bad idea. A lot of guys I've spoken with have said that they'd rather enlist and be sent over with others that they could trust to watch their backs, than chance being drafted in with people who didn't want to be there in the first place- (when asked if the draft were to be reenstated)

Anyways... this is pretty funny:

No draft because it would be just like in VietNam - the poor and minorities would be the ones drafted and sent to fight in Bush's War. The rich wouldn't have to go into uniform just like Georgie Boy whose Daddy got him into the Air National Guard.

During VietNam, the troops were mostly minorities and the poor and it was almost 20 years before the American people got enough sense to realize that they weren't there because they wanted to be but so that some spoiled rich kid like Bush could stay home.

Do we want the dissension we had at home during the VietNam War going on again? I don't think so. No Draft Unless The Rich Go In The Draft Pool With Everyone Else. Never happen.

Good God no! The military does not need a buch of lazy, drugged up, body pierced, morons who can't put a sentence together. We have too many of those on Yahoo Answers!!!!!!! Plus the time and effort in training and equiping draftees would waste resources. We have the A team on the job. We don't need to go back to the bad old days. The military could be a good place for a lot of people to get their act together. But that is what we spend education dollars for. Trust me nobody in the service wants most of the problem children on the Yahoo boards. Can't run, can' shoot, can't swim, can't spell and can't take authority.

We are so lucky we don't have a draft! Other countries, like S.Korea and Turkey, make all men that turn 18 join the military for 2 years. It is kind of a normal thing for other countries but that's why America is great because again we have the choice to choose our destiny. At the same time I feel bad for so many military men and women in our Army that keep getting stuck with extended tours of duty because there aren't enough troops to relieve them from their posts.

Not liking that idea right now. Let's keep that card for when we need to play it. There are other things you can do while you are trying to figure out your future. The military is a 6 year commitment, so they would prefer to have folks in there who want to be there. Unless you are independently wealthy or have very understanding parents you may want to look for a job, or take classes.

I am dead solid opposed to another draft. Why give incompetent leadership like Clinton and "W" an UNLIMITED POOL OF MANPOWER?

The last time we had a draft, 1940 to 1972, we were at war more than half the time. Our politicans can't handle that much power.

No new draft --don't let anyone panic you into that dictatorial idea.
