I think it all depends on where you are and each individuals financial status. I know if you are an airman with 2-3 kids and so so bills, you might struggle. It's just the name of the game. It also depends on the area. Because BAH rules have changed in the AF now, things are different. They used to give you a set amount depending on the area. Now, they give you a "rent cap". So, you have an amount that you cannot exceed unless you want to come out of your own pocket. Also with this change, you ONLY get what your rent payment actually is. So, if your cap is $750 and your rent is $575, $575 is ALL you get. Before the change, you got the ENTIRE $750 and that money you could use for bills or just to pocket. Unlike overseas, you do not get a utility allowance either. So, those are some of the pros and cons. Base housing, it just depends. You are going to have neighbors in your business whether you are on base or off. So, just take that into consideration too. That is like and people are just naturally nosy! LOL. Look at us poking into questions....lmao! Oh well, at least someone asked us the question first. As for substandard housing, if the military put you into SUBSTANDARD housing, they would be compensating you for it! They will never put you into housing below the standards of living. And come on, if you cannot do a little yard work, quit crying to everyone in the free loving world because it makes you look bad. Hope this helps a bit.

If you have low standards and are happy with being mediocore.
The facilities are old and they give you crap yards that you MUST keep up or you will or your spouse will be punished. Nosy A$$ neighbors and dirty kids all over the place. IF you have a problem with your house don't expect some one to come check it out for at least 30 days.
Now, there are some installations where base housing is remodeled and much better....but not much.
Find a place off the installation. You make more money and get more privacy. Even if you live in an apartment.

It all depends on where you live, each base is not the same. Right now we are in NC and I do not care for on post housing because it is way too small. The commissaries and PX are small but I shop at the commissaries because it is cheaper than offpost stores. Now at Ft Hood I love on base because the house are larger and the PX and commissaries are better than here in NC. I like living offpost because you do not have to worry about rules and regulations as much as you do offpost. Everyone has their preference. Now in Germany I hated on post housing because you live in stairwells like an apartment and that is annoying to hear your neighbors and such. You have to clean up after other people and their kids and I feel that since I am taking care of mine why should I have to take care of others. Some places in Germany you share a laundry room with other families and some do not care to even take care of those facilities. When you have your own place with you own everyday needs and do not have to share with someone else it makes it easier. We get our full BAH both in Ft Hood and NC. Overseas you get COLA which can be a lot depending on the rate.

It all depends on the base. I've been in some that were GREAT neighborhoods. Lots of friendly families looking out for each other.
But I've been in some that were pretty terrible. Punk *** kids. Crime. Bad housing units.
Get as much info as you can before you decide to move in. Drive through housing a few times - at different times of the day. Maybe talk to some families who live there and get their opinion.
Good luck.

You save money living on base. Free water and electric, cheaper grocery shopping. So I would say yes live on base, but then again you get money to live off base. Depending on your rank the more money you get and then you can find a place to live off base. You could also get a place with another military person and you both get the same amount of money and then you will be sharing the rent or mortgage. Theres so many lopoles and things change so much you have to talk to ADMIN. to findout how much you get to live off base.

Ya, the military isn't for everyone. Just ask the mediocre speller, Shakia.
As for housing, it really depends upon where you are in your life and what base you're being stationed at. I'd suggest getting in contact with a sponsor at your gaining base and inquiring through them about the quality of your base's housing.

i live in privatized military housing and it is on base. However it was just built before we moved in and before we lived hear for a year the roof leaked. not only that we pay 120% of the utility bill and other crap like that. i don't know about regular military housing but privatized housing (like what they have at WPAFB) isn't worth the BAH we get.

My ex was in the ARMY and we lived in housing. It was pretty good. You live among other military spouses which is good when your spouse is deployed. You don't have to pay rent and if the base is in the middle of a bad area your children won't have to go to bad schools. they will go to schools on the base. Hope that helps.

i've lived both on base and off...and i have to say, i like living off base alot more! On base, you usually have so so housing, and it's small, and not that clean...you have all kinds of nosy neighbors poking into your business all the time. The BAH you're making isn't worth the housing....i'm much happier off base where i got to pick what i wanted, and i'm still not paying as much...and not getting fined if i don't mow my grass.

Well, I know that, in the eyes of the army, an 18-year-old who marries someone he's known for two weeks is more mature than a 30-year-old batchelor, and is therefore deserving of housing. Whereas the batchelor has to live with a roommate in substandard barracks.
