They're the same OS, with some added security and networking functionality in Professional, and multimedia/home theater stuff in Media Center Edition. Check the link below for more.
I generally recommend Pro version, even for non-power-users because: the few times a "feature" or "function" not supported by Home pops up, it's a real pain... mostly having to do with networking functions, but still many others.

Your task list is pretty standard and I think XP Home would be all you would need or use. But ... I did discover that it does not do the Remote Control functions .... my 88 yo mother sometimes needs help on her system - with the remote control feature of XP pro, I can connect to her system and run it from an other system anywhere in the world over the interent (its secure and must be authorized by the user each time). I find that very usefull so would always go for pro but most people don't know it exists let alone have a need for it.

Think of it this way. XP Home is like a Ford Ranger. The XP Pro is like the F150. Both will get you from point A to point B in relative comfort. And you might think you'll never need the increased carrying capacity, power, or speed of the F150. But one day you're gonna have to move 2,000 lbs of furniture. I guarantee you will be real glad you have the F150.

In all respect, there isn't much difference between the two, besides about $100. The Professional version, which I use, has a few extra programs mostly for businesses along with a few minor functions that aren't really necessary for a gaming machine.

XP Home is more basic; not made for heavy duty large business applications. I run XP Home and have had no problems, even with Excel and Powerpoint homework projects..

I bought the home edition-I believe the pro edition is more for professional use(business).I would recomend you get the home edition, and add to it as you go.Microsoft has a lot of free downloads and updates.you will need to also get --office, if you are wanting to do other things, like spread sheets etc.--good luck.
