My 25 month daughter appears to have developed a very pale cafe au lait birthmark on her arm. She has spent a lot of time playing outside this summer, so could it have just now appeared because of sun explosure?

It's not a mole. I have several fo them and know what they look like. It's about an inch long and an inch wide, and is very pale, like she is tan there.

Gee for those of you who told me it can't happen, how do explain the number of people who say it did?

Yes, As they grow older birthmarks may become darker or appear. This is due to the (I think its called melanine )what gives us pigment on our skin. Also exposure to sun can affect the skin. So lots of sunblock mom..If it is a raised birthmark though ask the pediatrician he will say if baby needs to see a dermatologist.

It CAN just appear like that... but it's better to have it checked by her pede since you didn't notice it before now. There are birthmarks and then there are "birthmarks" that show later... not true birthmarks... most are completely innocent, but point it out to her doc next visit. Sometimes it's just a weird pigmentation and it's nothing, but better safe than sorry.

Babies are born with flawless skin, and moles and birthmarks come out around the first year of age. Looks like it's a birthmaek, but to prevent future worries, don't forget to always apply sunblock.

NO. not unless your letting her play with a magnifying glass in the sun.. If so the magnifying glass with focus the sunlight into her skin, causing a burn/birthmark. Need to be careful with this. I've seen ants "go up in smoke" with this type of situation.

Yes it can. At around 2 years of age a lot of things change in a babies appearance and body chemistry. They are no longer a baby, they graduate to the small child stage.

My daughter's birthmark gets more pronounces as she gets older. Sun may bring it out even more. But if you're worried about it, take her to the dr. He/She will put your mind at ease...
