At least with our Department there is no numbers on the jail uniform..just the name of the jail....Numbers are used in two different ways at least with our jail the inmate is given three sets of numbers...A BI# (bureau identification) that will never change, if he/she is in jail one time or numerous times..then a booking number which changes every time one is booked...there is also a person's number which is used to keep track of people in an RMS system...(records management system) and that too is also changes when ever the person is booked or has reported a crime or is a suspect ....the old numbers on the jail garb is an antiquated system....hope that helps

I've been in jail and had a jail ID number but it wasn't on the uniform. We had to wear a bracelet thing like in a hospital that had my jail number on it

I guess there may be somewhere and guess there used to be. But having been in law enforcement and working close with several prisons in many states for over 30 years, I have never seen a number on a real inmate in any prison.

Seen it on movies all the time

Not all prisoner uniforms have numbers. Most offenders carry identification cards with a department of corrections number and their photo(like a driver's license).

it is a way to given them a designation or identy that comesa from the prison. It strps them of their own being and is a form of humiliation. It is easier to keep track of numbers instead of names. Eventually some guards and prisoners get to know one another.
