Just curious b/c I am trying to figure out when would be best to fit in an exercise routine and I'm not sure what time would be easiest to stick to. I know it is an individual decision in the end, but I'm interested in others' answers and rationale.
Thanks!

well Meg, I like the early mornings before anyone else in the house wakes up. But I've always like working out in the mornings. You have to go with your biorhythms (whatever they are) or basically whenever you feel good and full of energy. I would never work out late evenings for instance, just too tired. First thing in the mornings also mean you've done it and gotten it done. None of this feeling like, "I'd better do it later" and forgetting, etc. You've worked out hard and can then shower for the day and go in to work or school. I see people walking briskly at noon in their nice clothes that they probably have to dry clean. I mean, come on, why would anyone want to stink all afternoon? Morning workouts are also cool cuz if you walk down the bikepath, you avoid exessive sun exposure. Imagine a cool morning walk, ending just as the sun comes up. Puts a smile on your face, doesn't it?

I don't believe that excercising in the morning is the best because you are less lazy... If anything, it is the best because you can do it before the rest of the working world begins. I have been a varsity rower for 6 years, practicing at 5:00AM-8:00AM every morning. I don't choose to practice at this time but it is the most convenient because it's when everyone else can make it before work or class. Off season though, I prefer to workout within the last 2 hours of the gym closing (mine closes 9,10 and 11pm), during this time is when I really feel like working out and the gym is usually the least busy at this time (avoid during dinner hours!). If I run outdoors, i also choose this time fo day because it's the coolest. But this is just my preference- it's up to you what time of day is most convenient for you and when you feel the "least lazy". I workout every day and i've stuck to this time, though a lot of people are tired by this time and just want to go to bed. I get a wonderful sleep afterwards though!

I personally like to exercise in the afternoon after work. That is when I start to get sluggish, and some good exercise gives me the energy I need to get through the rest of the day. I have also found that it helps me to sleep better at night than if I had exercised in the morning.

In the morning your body is in a fasted state (empty of glycogen, a form of carbohydrate) so if you do your exercise in the morning, on an empty stomach, your body will rely more on stored body fat for a fuel source.
Also if you exercise about 3-4 hours before a meal you can also take advantage of this fat burning.

I exercise before breakfast, so that my blood/glucose level is low and I'm burning fat, rather than glucose. Also, it jump-starts my metabolism, and I burn more calories for most of the day. It's a good pick-me-up in the morning, and I have to wait half an hour to cool down before I hit the shower.

i have tried mornings but i just cant get into it.. although i set several alarm clocks around my room to make me get up and turn them off...
what has worked for me is late afternoons... around 4 or 5 .. i can stick to that longer. the problem with this is then its hard to fall asleep at a reasonable hour..

The evening. That is because for one it is cooler, it is after work and it is after I had eaten and it really does help you wind down and sleep better at night and you feel better in the morning.

I do my exercises in the evening where the sun is almost down and when I'm free!

My kids have to be in school by 7 in the am, so I wake up, fix breakfast and hit the gym.
