I have to say it depends on the type of person you are. Because you can't leave a dog in the house on its own for a long time, so if you go out a lot, not the best companion/high maintenance. Also, cats are more indepedent so can be left alone for longer (presuming they have food and water). Cats come up to you for affection when THEY feel like it. Dogs require some attention constantly. If any body disagrees sorry.

It depends on your life style.. I have two disabled house cats that are like dogs that sit on your lap and come to the door when you come in. they play and are always there when you come in. they are more like dogs without the need to walk them or pick up poop out of the garden. Also as I work long hours it is great as they are more independent and still have each other.. I work with dogs in a boarding kennels and they are great company too.. I just think for my life style House cats are the best.. Also if you get one that need a bit more love they tend to be a Happier more loving pet. As they didn't go out they have bonded far stronger with me than a normal cat would and that's great.. Also you have no fear of them getting lost, run over or harmed with you not being there.. And a rescue centre will be over the moon when you walk in and say.. I will have the three legs one. ;-) they are a great companion with less time or even if you just want to go out for the day.. They wont mind a bit.. Hope this Helps. Michelle from England..

Depends what you're after - dogs take a lot more looking after. Cats can also worship you just as much as dogs do - my cat certainly does. She's always at the door to greet me whenever I come in, follows me around everywhere and loves to sleep beside me (when she's allowed!).

Plus, as Rosie says, you feel more honoured having such a reaction from a cat, because they're so choosy.

I agree that dogs are better companions, cats are too anti-social and only come around when they want something. I prefer cats because I had cats all my life, and there were a few exceptions where the cats behaved kinda like dogs.

well I say both have thier good and bad points. Cats can get into you lap and purr and nuzzle you. But can also claw things. Dog's you can take places and play in the yard with but you have to spend a tremendous ammount of time in training them and still sometimes that does not work. So it all depends on the person and animal to form a companionship with each other. I have an equal one with both my cat and dog.

They are both pretty good companions really!
I went out this evening, and when me & my children were nearly home, we could hear our 2 dogs going loopy as they must have realised we were on our way!! By the time we got to the front garden gate, our 2 cats had ran up to greet us, the yongest cat nearly tripping my son up so he would carry her, and once i had unlocked the front door we had 2 wait 4 about 5mins b4 we tried to get inside cos the dogs were so excited that if we had tried going straight indoors, the biggest dog would have probably knocked my youngest son over!
Its lovely if, like tonight-going out 4 about an hour and when u get in, the animals get really excited....shows they love u and u must b doing something right!!
So, if its compainionship....then get one of each, just to be safe!!!!

I am a dog person, however cats are much easier to take care of. You have to walk the dog and groom them. Cats poop in a litterbox and clean themselves. Although dogs make a better companion.... I have to say cats are better.
