More than anybody probably knows about, because... there is such a stigma attached to being mentally ill, robert downy junior, rosemary clooney, carrie fisher, spike milligan, ben stiller, jean claude van damme all suffer(ed) bi-polar disorder, it has also been said that Tom cruise is a voice hearer as is Joanna Lumley and Winston Churchill.

I learned this when I was in school and has helped me to understand peoples odd behavior. Every single person has mental illness. Be it for one minute a day, or more. No one is perfect. Even psychiatrists & therapists have to recieve mental counseling regularly. I know that Oprah Winfrey, Maya Angleou are two famous women who have suffered from ptsd. The list goes on and on. How many famous people have you heard of that have severe drug habits? Mental illness is present there. I think Mariah Carey has had a battle with it as well. You would be suprised just how many have issues. But like I said we all have mental illness at one time or another. It is part of being human.

Let's not forget Axl Rose!
Then there is Maurice Bernard (Sonny) of General Hospital fame! He is Bi-Polar in real life and now the writers of the soap are giving Sonny Bi-Polar disorder as well. What an excellent actor he is to pull that off!
Mental illness doesn't mean in any way that a person is not extremely intelligent and more times than not, they are very creative as well! It's just like diabetes, or any other disease, but affects the brain rather than other areas of the body!

i imagine the extra acceptable question is which have not had some themes. Many 'artists' are tormented with varietal themes...many self-medicate with all kinds of stuff (heroin ODs, etc.). attempt searching up Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Sarah Vaughn, Lennie Bruce...you may want to probably rack up a itemizing. William S Burroughs, etc...

It's not infrequent among the successful to have, or have a family history, of mood disorders like depression and bipolar disorder. These disorders seem to enhance creativity and drive, or the other way around. But no, I don't know them personally.
