I can't really speak on behalf of all atheists but Karma originally was used to describe the plight of man and the presence of evil within the doctrine of Hinduism and Buddhism. Karma is the notion of that which followed you from one incarnation to another and kept one in the constant circle of rebirth until hopefully eventually it was worked out or overcome by ones level of enlightenment and the need for reincarnation was eliminated and one attained nirvana and became one with the Brahman which is believed to be the life force of reality. How the Brahman became fragmented in the first place is never explained. But this is why the culture in the far east is such that so many can walk by the poor and needy and not feel a bit of compassion. The beggars are simply living out the Karma of past lives.

I believe only in the psychological aspect of karma. If you do something bad, something bad will happen to you not because of some supernatural power, but because you feel guilty. If the same thing were to happen to you under any other circumstance karma wouldn't be blamed for it, it's all in people's minds.

I am an atheist and still believe in the basic principle of what goes around comes around. You don't have to believe in a god to believe in Karma.

I cannot speak for all the aethists, but I do believe in karma, for there is a reason for us to be in a particular situation at all times...like we are being set up, from our birth and so on...and then we learn that what goes around...do unto others... for we expect compassion towards our own soul and hence we keep setting up for the same.
