I have had panic disorder for years. I have studied and read just about every theory on it and every treatment for it. At the moment, I am seeming to be doing better. I'll just share some things I've learned:
1. I've come to believe that it's possible panic disorder can be the result of another illness, or energy imbalance in your body. You could be allergic to something and that could be the cause. Check out the website www.naet.com. I'm doing NAET treatment for multiple allergies and we treated the emotion of "panic" and I've been doing better!
2. Paxil Sucks big time. Getting off it was Hell. Did that for 3 years and it probably caused some other health problems I'm experiencing.
3. If you have a phobia or specific fear try EFT. Go to www.emofree.com or try hypnosis. Because of my suffering with anxiety and panic attacks I've become a Certified Hypnotist. Questions, e-mail me.
4. Find a natural Doctor-one that does muscle response testing- and find out which vitamins and minderals your body is lacking. I feel better on high does of Magnesium.
5. I'm also doing a parasite cleansing because they too can cause a whole host of problems and energy imbalances.
6. If you want to understand the energy of your body better, I reccommend a book by Donna Eden called Energy Medicine.
7. And...aromatherapy. Lavender oil is great for panic. Young Living essential oils are the best. They have supplements that contain essential oils that you can injest.
8. If you have a health food store, I would look for a Bach's Flower Essence called "Rescue Remedy." Flower essences are great for emotional stuff. Just read their labels for the exact emotional issue you're having.
9. prayer and reading scripture, especially the psalms are there for us in our times of suffering.

Those drugs will NOT help you get better. They only treat the symptoms, and they only work for a short period of time. Ambien, Klonopin, and Xanax will in time make your anxiety worse. Ambien is a drug from hell and extremely addictive, you most seriously do not want to take it for more than a few days or you will not be able to sleep without it. You need to not take these drugs, but learn how to manage and beat your panic and anxiety, and this can be done! Find a doctor that can help you understand how to live with and cope with your anxiety issues without drugs if possible. Avoid like the plague any doctor that just wants to give you drugs. Find a psychologist, not a medical doctor, and not a psychiatrist unless the psychologist thinks you need the help a psychiatrist can give. Find a psychologist that deals with anxiety, they are the ones most qualified to help you. Go to your local library (yes, the library!) and you will find some very good books on anxiety. They will teach you what causes it, and most importantly how to deal with it, live with it, overcome it, and what drugs to use if you need drugs at all. I’ve visited with counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, and all of them know some, but I found a couple of books from the library to be more comprehensive and have more information than any one therapist or doctor that I’ve ever visited. A lot of anxiety disorders and panic attacks can be overcome without drugs if you know how to do it.

It's worth trying several things:
1) the route cause is probably something reasonably scary that happened to you a while before it started - understand that the 2 ARE connected and live with it.
2) When you panic you start breathing too fast and that in itself causes all sorts of nasty symptoms like pins and needles in your face, pacing, nausea. This won't go until your breathing calms down. So in order to calm your breathing -time it (3 secs in, 3 secs out) and do it through your stomach not your chest. put one hand on your chest and one on your tummy - You're doing it right if your tummy moves, not your chest heaving. Once you have controlled a panic attack like this you will be able to do it much more easily another time.
3) Breathing in to and out of a PAPER bag ensures you don't get too much O2 in your bloodstream and so controls your breathing if you can't manage number 2.
4) Don't take recreational drugs!

I find that changing your diet helps. I have cut out sugary drinks completely, which actually really helped. Also if i start to panic i do one of two things. Either I get my heart racing by running or dancing, at least then my heart is racing from physical exercise rather than panic. If i can't do that, i 'fake' being relaxed by slumping in my chair like I'm about to fall asleep, its like the body can't be in a panic if its in a relax position.
also re-examine your life, there may be something or someone that is having a negative effect on your life making you panic

Sort of. Like all remedies,doctors and professionals state that eating a balanced diet, can cure. Well thats true. I have panic disorder myself, but I eat healthy now,and take 100mg of zoloft-(which is not natural) Also surround yourself around comfortable company. And anytime you feel one coming on,train your mind to think,Its o.k I'm not going to die,This isn't it,I'll be o.k,and start breathing in threw your nose and out threw your mouth. Get fresh air,and sit down. Take multi-vitamins and lots of water or sports drinks. And remind yourself you are not alone, and you will make it threw anonther one,you always do. But,I understand sometimes there is no warning when they will happen. So,eat healthier,get at least 71/2 hrs sleep,and exercise,i,e walks,bike riding,etc.

I've had panic disorder for 3 years. I've developed intricate superstitions and rituals to fight panic, but the single best thing, that almost works every time, is a hot bath. let the water touch and soak the base of your head, where you neck and head meet. the minute that happens, your mind will just totally clear and relax

there are so many panic disorders. like with me it seems to be with everything. I have been on meds and learned it is best to realize the problem. You have to completly know that whatever it is that you panic about that it is all in your head. at the start you should do that as soon as you start to panic, you have to know this disorder is all in your head. sometimes i feel iam gonna go crazy in my brain and it is really scary but i just tell myself that iam just freakin out. i know it prob not much help but you will find your own way to help your issue and it is already in your brain you just got to work at it!!! good luck

you need a good relaxation therapist, local comunity 'well being' or 'healthy living initiative' groups offer it. I was amazed by how you can be taught to control anxiety, panic, and a whole range of debilitating symptoms. Its well worth a try, costs nothing and you have nothing to lose but your fears

There's no overnight cure, cognitive behaviour therapy is the best thing but you have to do the work. Breathing excersises do work, you have to focus on them rather than the panic.
Change your gp, you are not getting the healthcare you need. Try paroxatine hydrochloride, it doesn't suit everyone but it might suit you.
And be patient with yourself.
