DO YOU LEAVE IT OPEN FOR SOME FOODS AND CLOSED FOR OTHER FOODS?

BBQ is slow cooking, Grilling is fast cooking over high heat. For grilling you can go either way, I close the lid for some of the time grilling just to let it absorb some of the smoke for extra flavor.

For slow cooking (BBQ) you need a lower temperature and a closed lid. Cause, if you are looking, it ain't cooking.

If you have never tried slow cooking, let me suggest investing in a smoker. You will not be sorry. Yum Yum Yum

Keep it closed at all times till the food is done. closed keeps the heat in as well as the smoke to give the food that smoked flavor. Use wood chips for an even better taste.

You leave the grill closed while you got the fire going making sure as many coals as possible become red hot. You keep it open if your cookin something fast that you have to monitor so it wont get burnt, like a hotdog. You have to know how to work the grill its almost the same as on a fryin pan just got to keep opening the meat to see if blood is out or how you want it.

I always leave it open for steaks, burgers and chicken. I've never cooked ribs on the bbq, so I can't comment on that.

bbqing with the lid open is not recommended...it makes the fire flare...thus burning your food...you close the lid so that it will cook better and faster, also will get the flavor from the briquets

Shut it. That way the smoke envelopes the food and you get that smoked taste. YUM
