Statistics show that people who suffer from schizophrenia are more likely to harm themselves than they are anyone else. The violence stems from their beliefs acused by the illness, not due to personality traits as in non-schizophrenic people. If I had a choice of being in a room with someone suffering from schizophrenia and someone who suffers from anger management problems I choose the schizophrenic everytime!!!

People with schizophrenic illness (psychosis usually) can be very violent, as can people who are not psychotic. The difference is that the psychotic person seems "mad" and the non-psychotic seems "bad". The difference is that the violence of a schizophrenic person is probably fuelled by mistaken perceptions of the world - he may feel threatened or persecuted. In a sense, the psychotic has lost the ability to reliably make sense of his world. This can easily lead to violence.
But to address your actual question - schizophrenic people are not all violent people. Whether they (as a group) are more violent than non-schizophrenics - I don't know, but I suspect not.

There are many faces to schizophrenia, however it is a debilitating mental illness that can alter virtually every aspect of a person's being including thoughts, feelings, perceptions, sense of self, bodily coordination, social skills, interpersonal relationships, career and inability to care for one's self. There are many symptoms and no one sufferer will behave exactly like another. A person with schizophrenia is no more likely to be violent than any one else.
However it can make a sufferer extremely scared or paranoid and sometimes he/she may lash out because of fear.
Schizophrenics need our support and understanding. Many symptoms can be managed with medication, but because of side effects there is poor compliance.
I have a psychotic illness and believe me there is a lot of prejudice around.
Hope this helps

My only advice would be to do your own research and end your personal stigmas about mental illness..
Although some symtoms may occasionally overlap, they each have their own distinct qualities to justify proper diagnosis.
It is fine for people to give their opinions here..
That is what the site is for, right?
The answer is that very few are and the vast majority are not.. most prefer to seperate themselves from society or just be left alone with their issues.. they feel nobody can understand what they are going through.
Here's a link or two to back it up :)

Please look into the links if you have any doubts about the answers you will probably get in here.

Schizophrenia is mental illness. It is NOT "split personalities" like Hollywood says it is.
Although there are, indeed, violent people with this disease, it would be ignorant and incorrect to label them all as such :)
