Both kill the bacteria that cause plaque and gingivitis. Neither remove this bacteria, that is where brushing and flossing comes in and is so important.
Listerine has about 22% alcohol in it and uses essential oils as the active ingredients. Crest Pro Health rinse has 0% alcohol and uses CPC as its active ingredient. Both active ingredients are proven to reduce the bacteria that causes gingivitis and plaque. I don't consider one to work better, BUT I don't like the fact that Listerine has so much alcohol. The alcohol does not help kill the bacteria and will actually dry out your mouth and that will increase bad breath (saliva naturally cleanses the mouth).
But again, if you don't remove the bacteria that was killed by the rinse, you still have dead bacteria festering in your mouth. Rinses have been proven to only go under the gums about 1mm, the base of a healthy pocket can be 3mm and unhealthy pockets are much deeper than that. So it cant reach very far under the gums, another reason to floss well and see you hygienist to clean deeper and keep you healthy!

The only way to fight gingivitis and effectively remove plaque from your teeth is to brush and floss (properly, I might add) at least once every 24 hours. You cannot remove plaque with a mouthrinse. However, Listerine DOES kill the bacteria in the plaque and it's the bacteria that causes gingivitis. Crest Pro Health supposedly also kills the bacteria, but there is no alcohol in it, which is the ingredient Listerine has that kills the bacteria. Crest Pro Health has another ingredient that is supposed to kill the bacteria. Unfortunately this ingredient also stains the teeth a nice light brown shade. The stain is removable, though not by brushing and flossing. You have to go see your dentist or hygienist for a professional cleaning to have the stain removed.

Well of course you have to floss but they are both proven to do the same thing. and the whiting stuff doesn't work. It isn't on long enough to effect your teeth. Well put it this was professional tooth whiting systems that are like $350 has to be left in for an hour of more and it works. Whiting tooth paste or any other type of whiting stuff doesn't work on your teeth! kinda off subject but that one person said she liked that stuff so i had to tell you that

RE:
What is better for fighting gingivitis and plaque: "Listerine" or new "Crest pro health rise"?
If anybody has any web sites to back up their claims. Or can cite discrete examples of why they know the answer to this please let me know. Thanks.

truthfully neither and both! Its not necessarily the product but the action envolved! Brushing and gargling both help fight oral mouth afflictions. Since literine is a mild anticeptic i'd go with it! You can even brish with it!!

Try half strength hydrogen peroxide. (Mix half and half with water.) It's that stuff you buy at the pharmacy in the brown bottles. It's cheap and works. Plus it helps make your teeth white. Swish but don't swallow.

I agree with Tom, flossing is the best way. In fact, my dentist told me that flossing is the most important thing you can do to save your teeth.
