Because people who care about looking "normal" will keep it a secret if they're polyamorous. Things like swinging tend to appeal to them, because they can appear to be a normal suburban couple and then let loose in private gatherings where no one else will find out about them.
Goths and geeks are outcasts anyway, and are more willing to be open about whatever turns them on.

Most people who *use the word* polyamorous are geeks; it first showed up on the internet, and it's not well-known in the offline communities.
However, multi-person romantic or sexual relationships are not limited to goths & geeks; there are plenty of non-geeky poly people who've never heard the word "polyamory"--they just have two partners, and the three of them are fine with that. (Some have more. But it gets less stable with more people; long-term five-person relationships are rare.)

In my opinion there is one main shared trait in both groups. Goths (just another name for ultra-conformist "non-conformist" losers) and geeks generally lack the emotional maturity and self control required for a monogamous relationship. They seek the company of like minded people, because they often have the same wants and needs. No matter how much they claim to be loners, they, being humans, are gregarious and want to be accepted. Most Goths and Geeks grow out of this embarassing phase and go on to have monogamous relationships.
