I don't know...if it's trash...it's free game. But if it's obviously for Goodwill or somebody like that, I always check with the homeowner.

I'm a big-time refinisher too and I've NEVER had anybody say no...even if they'd scheduled a pick-up.

Two Stories: One time I had a huge load of very sale-able furniture and appliances that I had cleaned and some even refinished. I brought it to the local Viet Nam Veterans Thrift Store...that's the BIG junk store in my town. When I came back with a second load, they had thrown EVERYTHING from my first trip into their dumpster...they were getting ready to close and didn't have time to deal with it. Never again.

When I first moved down South from Yankeeland, I found a really nice wheelbarrow sitting on the curb by some trash cans...so I took it home. A few weeks later, I found another one...and took it home. After about a year in this city...It dawned on me that a LOT of people put some of their recyclables trash in wheelbarrows. I made an honest effort to try and find whose wheelbarrows I had, it turns out, stolen. Anyway...if I have the slightest doubt...I ask or just leave it.

sometimes people don't know what they're throwing out. I love to refinish old stuff. You'd be amazed at how much treasure you'd find. My best find is an "Old Charm" solid oak cabinet (from around 1935) that had been painted (the horror). I could get about $2k for it.

besides - your saving room in the landfills for all of those old golf clubs.

NO shame at all. If you like getting your hands on old furniture other people might throw away, I suggest looking for a freecycle group in your comunity. www.freecycle.org, they usually have groups on yahoo - you can post things you want to get rid of, or pick up items other folks want to get rid of, and you can find some really neat things without having to dig through the trash!

I am not sure what bulk pick up furniture is. But if it is stealing, then you know the answer already. But if it is trash at the curbside, I do it myself. Yesterday I placed the shell of my computer at the curb, and it was picked up before the garbage collectors were here.

If that is your case, then it is fair game.

Do you mean furniture that's discarded and that the owners are throwing away? I think it's pretty cool that you'd take that stuff and do something with it. Home and Garden TV (HGTV) is doing a program just like that.

if it is in the trash or being thrown out then go for it! If u like to make it your own and make it pretty for your own home then i think u are very smart!

I bought a new couch and within 2 hours of throwing my old one in the dumpster someone came and got it to use in their home. So u are not the only one that does that.

When I was homeless that's how I made a living. Picking up stuff and then selling. So you're doing a disservice to the homeless young lady.

I'd rather answer just the headline part: wow, you must've really picked some truly hideous wallpaper to post that question in this category.

now to answer your real question: you're a kleptomaniac and it's unconscionable. however you justify it to yourself or think you can distinguish it from any other form of theft it's reprehensible.
