I took prozac about 9 years ago and it caused me to gain a lot of weight, not the mention the withdrawal from it was a *****. Have they improved it any since then?

Good question. I don't know if it's been improved, but I am taking it. I went to my doctor and expressed how depressed I was. I believe it to be part of peri-menopause, and I was becoming apparently very difficult to live with. The doctor put me on it,and I feel tremendously better. Nothing bothers me like before, and at this time, I am very thankful for it. I have experienced no weight gain. I have no plans to go off of it, until I am well past meno. My hubby calls them my "happy" pills.

Prozac is one of many antidepressant medications. It is probably one of the most tried and tested because it has been around for a long time but it does have side effects. There are newer groups of antidepressants now. They are tailroed for different symptoms associated with depression such as anxiety and weight loss. If you think you need to start taking an antidepressant again, you should really be consulting with your doctor who will assess your need for antidepressant or other medication, make sure that you don't have a medical condition that is making you feel the way you are such as a thyroid gland problem and then tailor your medication to reduce side effects and withdrawal .Hope this helps.

I took prozac as recently as about a month ago. It didn't really seem to do anything for my depression. It just made me wicked tired and that was about all it did do. I took wellbutrin also which worsend my depression... Psych meds don't seem like a great solution to me.

i've been taking it for 3 years...haven't experienced any weight gain. I was prescibed prozac for anxiety, not depression. I think it's great and it's helped sooooo much. My husband also calls them my "happy pills" and loves the "new" me....I'm so much more pleasant to be around now.

Not that I am aware of, and I was also on it about the same time you were, and gained some weight. My best advice to you is to check into Wellbutrin. It worls great and even can help you loose some weight.
