Not in the way you think. The word soul in the bible (from which the idea comes from) is the word for Breath. It is breath life. Originally man was made, formed and created. He was body, soul (Breath life) and spirit. The spirit was lost when Adam fell so only the body and soul were left. So when people of body and soul die they go to the grave. They are dead. Until the return of Christ that is what will happen to everyone. Those who are born of God's spirit will, when Christ returns, be the first to get up from the grave and meet him in the clouds. And those of the born again children of god who are alive at that time will be transformed. Then, at a later time there will be a Resurrection of the just and unjust when everyone is judged. Then after that, those who are just will join the born again children of God in paradise, and the unjust shall join the adversary and his minions in the second death. And thats what happens - in a nutshell.

The Body is a temporary temple for the spirit, the Bible is a Spiritual teaching of making a eternal choice for where you go.in Spirit> your Flesh will rot as sure as you walk and breath today, when the Spirit leaves your body will not be sustained, I say again we are Spirits living in a Body that is temporary.

I'll tell you this, it's a lot easier to deal with the thought of death if you believe your soul lives on! I do Past Life Regression Hypnosis for curious folks and some of the things they see are kind of hard to explain. They almost always have a better view on how they will deal with passing.

For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten. Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they have no portion anymore to time indefinite in anything that has to be done under the sun. ECCLESIASTES 9:5-6.

When we die I believe we die and that's it.
If there is anywhere else to go, I don't think we'll be able to cognize it anyway.
The only thing that makes everything real to us is our perception.
So without perception, in the form of the five senses which would die when we die, I can't see how we would know one way or another.

WHAT JESUS SAID ABOUT DEATH
Jesus Christ spoke about the condition of the dead. He did so with regard to Lazarus, a man whom he knew well and who had died. Jesus told his disciples: “Lazarus our friend has gone to rest.” The disciples thought that Jesus meant that Lazarus was resting in sleep, recovering from an illness. They were wrong. Jesus explained: “Lazarus has died.” (John 11:11-14) Notice that Jesus compared death to rest and sleep. Lazarus was neither in heaven nor in a burning hell. He was not meeting angels or ancestors. Lazarus was not being reborn as another human. He was at rest in death, as though in a deep sleep without dreams. Other scriptures also compare death to sleep. For example, when the disciple Stephen was stoned to death, the Bible says that he “fell asleep.” (Acts 7:60) Similarly, the apostle Paul wrote about some in his day who had “fallen asleep” in death.—1 Corinthians 15:6.
The Bible teaches that the dead “are conscious of nothing at all.” They are not alive and have no conscious existence anywhere. The account of Lazarus confirms this. Upon returning to life, did Lazarus thrill people with descriptions of heaven? Or did he terrify them with horrible tales about a burning hell? No. The Bible contains no such words from Lazarus. During the four days that he was dead, he had been “conscious of nothing at all.” (Ecclesiastes 9:5) Lazarus had simply been sleeping in death.—John 11:11.
The account of Lazarus also teaches us that the resurrection is a reality, not a mere myth. Jesus raised Lazarus in front of a crowd of eyewitnesses. Even the religious leaders, who hated Jesus, did not deny this miracle.
Think about this too: If Lazarus had been in heaven for those four days, would he not have said something about it?— And if he had been in heaven, would Jesus have made him come back to earth from that wonderful place?— Of course not!
Yet, many people say that we have a soul, and they say that the soul lives on after the body dies. They say that Lazarus’ soul was alive somewhere. But the Bible does not say that. It says that God made the first man Adam “a living soul.” Gen. 2:7, Adam was a soul. The Bible also says that when Adam sinned, he died. He became a “dead soul,” and he returned to the dust from which he had been made. The Bible also says that all Adam’s offspring inherited sin and death too.
The Scriptural teaching of the resurrection, however, is not compatible with the doctrine of the immortality of the soul. If an immortal soul survived death, no one would need to be resurrected, or brought back to life. Indeed, Martha expressed no thought about an immortal soul that was living on elsewhere after death. She did not believe that Lazarus had already gone to some spirit realm to continue his existence. On the contrary, she showed her faith in God’s purpose to reverse the effects of death. She said: “I know he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.” (John 11:23, 24) Likewise, Lazarus himself related no experiences of some afterlife. There was nothing to report.
Clearly, according to the Bible, the soul dies and the remedy for death is the resurrection.

The Hindu scripture (Bhagavad-Gita) gives us a full explanation of who we are (eternal spirit souls neither created, nor die), our relationship with God, the material universe, time and material activities.
The Bhagavad-Gita explains that we are spiritual souls who inhabit material bodies. At the time of death of one body we may move onto another body depending on our actions and desires. Here are some verses in relation to this:
Chapter 2, Verse 12.
Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings; nor in the future shall any of us cease to be.
Chapter 2, Verse 13.
As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A self-realized soul is not bewildered by such a change.
Chapter 2, Verse 17.
Know that which pervades the entire body is indestructible. No one is able to destroy the imperishable soul.
Chapter 2, Verse 18.
Only the material body of the indestructible, immeasurable and eternal living entity is subject to destruction; therefore, fight, O descendant of Bharata.
Chapter 2, Verse 19.
He who thinks that the living entity is the slayer or that he is slain, does not understand. One who is in knowledge knows that the self slays not nor is slain.
Chapter 2, Verse 20.
For the soul there is never birth nor death. Nor, having once been, does he ever cease to be. He is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, undying and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain.
Chapter 2, Verse 22.
As a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, similarly, the soul accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones.
Chapter 2, Verse 23.
The soul can never be cut into pieces by any weapon, nor can he be burned by fire, nor moistened by water, nor withered by the wind.
Chapter 14, Verse 4.
It should be understood that all species of life, O son of Kunti, are made possible by birth in this material nature, and that I am the seed-giving father.
Chapter 14, Verse 5.
Material nature consists of the three modes--goodness, passion and ignorance. When the living entity comes in contact with nature, he becomes conditioned by these modes.
Chapter 14, Verse 6.
O sinless one, the mode of goodness being purer than the others, is illuminating, and it frees one from all sinful reactions. Those situated in that mode develop knowledge, but they become conditioned by the concept of happiness.
Chapter 14, Verse 7.
The mode of passion is born of unlimited desires and longings, O son of Kunti, and because of this one is bound to material fruitive activities.
Chapter 14, Verse 8.
O son of Bharata, the mode of ignorance causes the delusion of all living entities. The result of this mode is madness, indolence and sleep, which bind the conditioned soul.
Chapter 14, Verse 9.
The mode of goodness conditions one to happiness, passion conditions him to the fruits of action, and ignorance to madness.
Chapter 14, Verse 14.
When one dies in the mode of goodness, he attains to the pure higher planets.
Chapter 14, Verse 15.
When one dies in the mode of passion, he takes birth among those engaged in fruitive activities; and when he dies in the mode of ignorance, he takes birth in the animal kingdom.
There are many more, but I hope this gives you some idea about the nature of the soul and reincarnation.

Supposedly after we die our souls leave our bodies. But no one can prove this because you have to die to find out, and so far no one has come back to tell us.

You should read Tibetan book of the dead it seems to me to be a good reference point plus it shows you how to avoid reincarnation and what to expect when we cross ,from what i understand its different for everyone. In the sense different religions will have different views on what the are expecting, because only our conscious survives our thought become of the most importance and are vehicles of creation like mini gods but restricted to the limits of human understanding. happy to help ju
