Yeah, I've seen it. This one cat I had would eat the other cat's afterbirths and everything else, and occasionally steal the kittens and take them to her own nest. They would suckle eachother's kittens and all that, too.

No, but I've seen my dog guard my cat while she was giving birth. I woke up to hear him barking and growling. He was guarding my cat and wouldn't let any of the other cats come near her while she was having kittens. Lucky was a medium size little schitzu and he thought he was a cat himself.
It was the cutest thing I've ever seen. Even after she had the babies, he guarded the babies when she was gone. He's dead now, he lived to be about 14 years old, but I swear he was the only dog with the cats and he thought he was a cat himself.

Wouldn't suprise me at all. There are plenty of stories of cats adopting puppies, chicks, squirrels, they are very maternal.
Mamas will share babies if they have litters at the same time too, so maybe midwife kitty wanted to help out.
