There are so many factors to take into consideration that I don't know where to start!

Should I go for the one with the most impressive miracles? Coolest-looking gods/goddesses? Or nicest places of worship, most/least demanding observances, the most festivals, greatest/smallest number of prohibited foods, most enjoyable afterlife, largest number of believers, strictest moral code, or the biggest/smallest number of holy wars to its name?

What about its attitude towards women? Is my religion likely to get me persecuted or stoned to death? Are there any other factors I might have overlooked?

Hey, I hope my answer doesn't just blend in with all the rest.
First of all, I think it's obvious that each person will try to convince you that the religion they follow is the best. The problem is, there's no easy way here. YOU are the one who has to research the subject. The answers people give you shouldn't be able to convince you one way or another. If you're really ready to live a certain life and follow certain rules, go out and talk to people who understand. Read books. There are a lot of ways to research this topic. But you have to be honest with yourself. And you have to really look deep beneath the surface of each religion.
Personally, I'm Jewish. (Most people on here are Christian I believe). I follow my religion and believe in it completely. I have no doubts whatsoever. But Judaism isn't really interested in "converting" people. Judaism doesn't want new followers. For that reason, becoming a Jew (assuming you're not Jewish) is a very difficult process. It takes a long time, a lot of effort and a lot of money too.
So like I said, go out and do some research.

If you have any questions about Judaism, please feel free to contact me at yehudit359@yahoo.com

Good luck :)

I just read the other answers, and it's interesting that some think that religion is man made. Actually, if I may, the Bible says that God tells us how to worship him, and that includes being truly peaceful, humble, loving, not getting involved in conflicts, not even learing the ways of violence in any form, etc. Certainly not being egotistical, that's completey wrong. (Isaiah 2:2-4)

Would you believe the Bible also says that Babylon the Great, as mentioned in Revelation 17, represents all religion that is in opposition to God's will? That includes "Christian" religions too. With the comments just below, and others I've heard, there is a lot of dissatisfaction with religion, and rightly so. Jesus condemned Jewish rel. leaders of his day for making teachings of men as "sacred doctrine", instead of just teaching God's ways.
That's more widespread than ever. Babylon the Great is spoken of as a prostitue, committing fornication with the kings of the earth. Who is it that is always getting involved in politics? "Christian" religions! Disgusting.

My religion is Jehovah's Witnesses, and I hope you will consider looking into it. We have tasteful places of worship, our meetings are not hard to understand, we obey the moral code of the Bible, which in the world's eyes is probably strict, but it works well. Loose morals is one reason why there is so much trouble in this world. We do not perform miracles, we observe the anniversary of Jesus' death once a year in the spring, have about 6.5 million members around the world, and absolutely no holy wars to our name. We learn due respect for women. As for persecution, Jesus said his true followers would be persecuted and have trials, but when you have faith and trust in God, you receive the strength to deal with it. But it won't go on forever.

One other person mentioned the slaughter of babies in Exodus, and the killing of people in Joshua, I would like to address that.

Jehovah did not call for the killing of the babies, that was Pharoah that did that, Ex. chapter 2. He was worried that the Israelites would come to outnumber the Egyptians, purely politics. The same thing happened when Jesus was a baby, remember? Herod was alarmed when Jesus was called a king, purely politics again. Matthew ch. 2.

As for the wars in Joshua, Jehovah promised that particular land to the descendants of Abraham and they had to get rid of the people there to do so. That sounds harsh, but those people's religion was horrible, they sacrificed their children in fires. Archaeologists have found jars containing the remains of some of those children and wonder why God didn't destroy them sooner. They also had horrible morals, they deserved what they got. (Leviticus 18:25 says they had defiled the land and would be vomited out.) The Bible Handbook, by Henry H. Halley is where this thought is.

But on the other hand, Rahab lived in Jericho, had heard about the crossing of the Red Sea, and put faith in God and his chosen nation. She and her family were saved from destruction. Anyone living in Canaan could have been saved if they wanted to. Wars that were truly from God have always been selective. And he makes a way out for those that really want it.

However, God's people were punished when they showed a lack of faith, they were not exempt from that. (Jude 5; also Leviticus 18:28 says that the Israelites would be vomited out of the land if they defiled it like the previous inhabitants had.)

True religion upholds the Bible above all else. We get a lot of flack for that, but Jesus said that would happen. It doesn't rattle us at all. I really hope you'll consider this, the Bible has all the answers that people are looking for. All the best!

Religion is man made, so as man can never be trusted there is no best religion.
Much of the holy books, are written so man can control others, such as the women of the world, I'm glad to say that modern woman are waking up to the fact. but it's all done to keep man in control, show me a poor religion, look at that lot on the TV in the USA how much are they conning out of others, but are they poor themselves, no I wonder how much they get for themselves.
No religion is there to make profit for man kind, and of to murder in Gods name.
Religion is well out of date, and the bad thing about all this is that God gets the blame, read the papers how many times do you read that the bomb that killed Innocent people was done in the name of God, what rubbish, it's all about some men wanting all the power, and brainwashed people following like sheep.

What we need, and all we need is faith in ourselves, but more important faith in God.

Love & Peace

I must add that people think that Islam is the best religion, what rubbish, but this attracts lots of youngesters who love looking for touble, the big probel here is the true believers of Islam who would never want to hurt anybody, yet they get blamed for all the problems,

I am not sure if I have the answer and I am not going to preach to anyone I simply will share that for me I had to do a lot of searching before I found what was right for me. It just felt different. I studied the Eastern religions, I visit the meetings of many Church's and felt in it all sad as I tired to find the truth. How would I know I knew it would feel different and I would just know. I am so happy now where I am at I have found peace.
best luck to you just be open.

This is a very good question. I have a very simple answer. What we need to do is to get rid of all the religions. The different religions are man made. In the Bible, God did NOT say you will be Baptist or you will be Catholic or you as a Protestant. You need to go with your heart. That is where God lives. I am a firm believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. He is only a whisper away. What religion does that make me? The Bible is truth.

Joining Christ’s Church

Jesus Christ taught that baptism is necessary to become a member of His kingdom or Church (John 3:5).
The minimum age for baptism is eight, when a person is old enough to comprehend the importance of the commitment that he or she will be making. Regardless of gender, marital status, or ethnic origin, Jesus Christ invites all who are prepared to join His Church.

Prior to being baptized, a person must have faith in Jesus Christ and repent of his or her sins. Once an individual has repented and come to understand the commitments and obligations that come with joining the Church, he or she may be baptized.

This must be done by immersion by one having the proper authority. The person is then confirmed a member of the Church and given the gift of the Holy Ghost. This is also done by those having the proper authority. They place their hands on the head of the person being confirmed, pronounce a blessing, and bestow this marvelous gift.

After baptism, Church members promise to keep the commandments and to strive to follow Christ.

There are two categories you can divide all the religions of the world by:

1) Religions that you have to have enough good works to go to heaven

2) and a religion where going to heaven is a free gift, not dependant on your past behavior.

The only religion in the world that fits category 2 is Christianity.

God knew that all of us have done bad things therefore none of us were good enough to go to heaven. Furthermore, we all deserved eternal punishment for what we had done wrong. So he came to earth as Jesus and took our penalty so that justice could be appeased and at the same time we could be forgiven and have a friendship with him.

If you want to recieve God's forgiveness just pray a prayer in your own words and tell Him that you're sorry for what you've done and you're willing to make God the highest leader in your life.

God bless.

Yeah, this is though...

if there is no God, then you ought not attend any of them, because you are the one who ought to make your own decisions about all things (morality included).

If God is easy, and just likes the idea that people know that higher powers exist, then what you choose doesn't matter. But that kind of god seems really disinterested in you and your life, doesn't he? If he is this disinterested in the details of his religion and just expects you to choose one regardless of the fact that they are all vastly different, then isn't he just as disinterested in you?

If God is the source of all truth and is interested in the purity of that truth and wants us to know what that truth is, then he would preserve it in a messge throughout the ages. You would need to find a religion that stayed consistent in its message for thousands of years. Its documents would have to be true and historically accurate.

I and many others like myself believe that this is found in the Bible. The eternal God revealed himself to mankind though a message written down and preserved throughout the ages. We have more textual evidence for the validity of the Bible than any other ancient manuscript by far. That is why I am a Chrisitian...because the message is sound and has been preserved. The credential are superb.

A couple things you might have overlooked:

Jews have to cut off the end of their penis, so if you haven't done that already you might want to think about that point.

You should also research the dues for the various religions. Some cost more than others.

Charismatic leadership is something a lot of people look for.

You're not allowed to be President if you're not Christian. If you're non-white or female you don't need to worry about this.
