Very tough question.
From my perspective, I'm tough to get to know, have many foibles and bad qualities and can say things without thinking. But I have my finer qualities, too!.
I wouldn't just "be myself" on a first date, becaue I would want the date to recognise those finer qualities first in order to have a second date and build up a relationship where the two people involved can gradually learn to understand and accept one another.
But I wouldn't hide anything from anyone in a long term relationship.

What if your natural self IS is to impress?
On a first day most people are on their best behavior as much as they know how.
That does not mean they are trying to impress anyone. It simply means they don't know you well enough to be relaxed.

Just be your natural self. If you pretend to be someone else and then the person you go out without really likes you, how do you think they'll feel when they find out it was all an act? Just be yourself and let people like you for you!

Just be yourself. That's impressive I'm sure. If you try to be someone your not, you will only set yourself up for a maybe letdown. He will see you as what you show yourself to be. You want to be real. He'll see that and appreciate it.

just be yourself, most people can tell when your trying too hard. then they wonder why...has she never had a boyfriend before?why is she trying so hard? have all of her other dates ran away from her for some reason?
dont worry if they dont like you for being yourself, at least you'll know the difference as to why.

first impress then be yourself then the relationship wont work out becuase the guy wouldnt now who you really are
