it is definitly a physical addiction, but mental too because even after people have quit for years they say they have a craving so it must be in the mind, because by then the physical addiction is surely gone

I think it's more mental.
Once you really decide you're ready to quit, you will.
Of course, it took me 30 years... but once I told myself-- that's it-- it was.
The physical addiction is not fun.
But the mental addiction is why you hear of so many people starting again after years of being a non-smoker.

After 6 years of not smoking, there are times when I still want a cigarette. I just tell myself, "Nope. Sorry." Then, the craving passes.

When I started smoking, it was cool. When I started working, everyone smoked... so it was much more socially acceptable than it is today.

When I quit, I considered it to be one of the greatest things i had ever done.

Its very much a physical. Many people think they can go without it, then realise the pull. The body begins to crave the nicitine, and thats why people need patchs for it and so on. I'm sure alot of people would not be smoking right now if it was only mental.

Both. Until you go without nicotine for 72 hours (3 days) and get it all out of your system your body will crave it. After the 3 days when the nicotine is out of your body then it's just a mental game to not pick one up again.

So totally both. When you quit smoking not only do you go thru the physical withdrawl of the nicotine, but you also have to go thru the physical withdrawl...what to do with your hands, what to put in your mouth... It can be hell.
