I'm not absolutely certain but I think the ancient Egyptians were the first to "Record" their marriages in a legal fashion.

They were also the first to consider women equal to men in that relationship.

It's a crying shame that when Rome conquered Egypt, they changed all that... then changed it again when roman Catholicism took over the Roman world. After that, women were property.
