Americans are from a thoughtful and honest debate on the war in Iraq.
There is no doubt that most Iraqis despised Saddam's rule, but they were equally opposed to our own from the occupation's origins.
It is time to cut and run. Time to cut the hated occupation and run from the brutality and violence that we are responsible for. It is time to start working for peace, which entails fleeing from our previous path of bloodshed. War was not the answer in Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, Iraq and a thousand other bloody excursions, and it will not be the right answer for Iran, North Korea, Syria, China, Libya Cuba or any other demon we can conjure up. War is never the answer.

thejude - If you have never fought in a war or been in the military, then how do you know?
It is quite obvious to all but the flag-waving people who are in denial that it is better to get out, AS THE IRAQIS want us to do and let them stand up to do whatver is necessary for peace. We are BLOCKING PEACE there... raping, slaughtering, is not "liberation" it is imperialism.

It continuously boggles my mind that people cannot seem to get the concept that we can SUPPORT our troops AND also NOT support the war. Propaganda tells us that this war is about protecting and aiding the Iraqi civilians, but the TRUTH tells us it is about greed and oil. Our presence there only makes us sitting ducks. Either way, the so-called mission is now complete. Saddam is on trial and a new Iraqi government has been installed. It is time to bring our troops home so they can not only be closer to their families but also be on American soil to protect US!

If you've never served any time in the military, or fought in a war you have NO idea what's going on over there. My son has been in Iraq since November 2005. He just came home for a much needed 15 day leave to see his family. Tonight he will be having a nice big steak dinner with his wife and three children ages 17, 15, and 11. Sunday they're going to spend together and then he goes back Monday, July 10th. and will be there until his tour is up in November. At this time next week, as we sit in our nice cozy homes watching our favorite tv program, he will be dressed in full gear, sweating and putting his life on the line protecting his country.
Before he left to come home it was so hot over there that his boots melted on his feet and he had blisters on the bottoms of his feet. It will be even hotter when he gets back there. He was almost killed. Thank God he was just bruised and banged up. One of his soldiers was killed last month. He and all the other soldiers put their life on the line every minute they are there.
People in Iraq want us there. They still don't know what it's like to be truly free. They have some freedom, like going to the market, etc. but there are still curfews, and the police are corrupt. The soldiers are learning and are being given more and more responsibilities every day.
We are going to be in Iraq for a very long time. No, war may not be the answer, but the bottom line is, we are at war! To cut an run would be the worst thing we could do right now. Sr. President Bush did just that. Had he been allowed to finish what he started we would not be where we are today.
People were and still are being abused, beaten, tortured and worse! Sadam is still controlling a lot of things. He's guilty of horrible crimes and should be executed for what he did, not be allowed to make a mockery of the court system as he's doing every day!
My son says not to believe everything the media says. If he can go over there facing terrible conditions and putting his life on the line every day so you and I can enjoy this wonderful thing called freedom then the least we can do is support him. You don't have to support the war but please, "SUPPORT OUR TROOPS.
Yesterday my son and his family were walking around their town enjoying the day and one another when they came upon a guy that had all kinds of signs protesting the war. My son went right over to him and said " Along with all these signs can't you at least put up a sign saying SUPPORT OUR TROOPS"!

I am of the cut and run variety. I think that we need to get out and maybe ask for the UN to send in a peace keeping force to help the Iraqis. I honestly believe that the terrorists, at least in Iraq will stop there insane treatment of their own people.I believe that if the Americans leave the Iraqi people will take care of the terrorists on their own. If they go after them while the Americans are there they will be killed as supporters of the infidels. If the Americans are gone then they will be protecting themselves. And you know what , it's their country to do with as they wish.

You prove the point I have been making repeatedly about who has been behind the anti-war, anti-U.S.A., anti-bush propaganda campaign. One has only to look at your other posts to see clearly that you are a communist. You defend communist dictatorships wherever they are and no matter what the circumstances. Therefore anyone with a modest understanding of the ideology you support realizes that you care little about the welfare neither of Americans nor Iraqis, but seek only the defeat of the United States as it is the epitomy of all that you hate. You have no credibility. The very fact that you can spread your lies and venomous attacks on this country and it's troops at war only proves just how great and how strong this country is. Make no mistake...though you are allowed to do this, you are clearly an enemy of this nation and everything it stands for. Why don't you move to one of these fine countries like North Korea, China, or Cuba?

You don't know very much about human nature.
Take a few lessons from history and wake up and smell the coffee. As long as man lives, war will exist. I suggest you get used to it and start realizing that you cannot have your cake and eat it too.
Leaders often have to make the decision to kill the few to save the many. That could mean 10's of thosands to save 100's of thousands, or millions.
Don't we all wish life was easy, and war was not an inevitability, but that is not being realistic. Good leaders make the difficult decisions and weigh both the short, as well as long term consequences.
"Cut and run" is not an option, we have to be in it to win it.

Finishing the fight and occoplishing the goal is the answer.
Leaving now and trying to fix things diplomatically is like spitting on the graves of those who died for what the believed was the sake of a free iraq.
Until there is some sort of military force and government the people are open to attack from any organized group of militants.
Without us theyre sitting ducks, and the old iraq picks up where it left off.

If you want a thoughtful and honest debate - you need to start by being thoughtful and honest yourself.
By every measurable criteria we are winning.
We have consistently achieved our goals (such as the Iraqi elections) on schedule.
The enemy has managed to do nothing but cause massive civilian suffering.
Let the people who were actually there tell you how things are going - not somebody spinning the news to suit their political agendas.

Kick the media out and let our troops finish the job. You would rather see all the troop deaths stand for nothing - you are a true patriot. You need to realize that peace is achieved through strength.

Why should there be no middle ground? Cut and run is a horrible idea, and would undo everything we have worked so hard for. We NEED to enable the Iraquis to protect themselves. We're almost there, but if it happens, Democrats will feel like they lost. That's why you hear so much of this garbage these days. DON'T fall for it. We'll be out soon enough. This AIN'T Vietnam!

Why don't we admit that we do not understand the Muslim mindset? Then, announce that we invite EVERY Muslim nation to send a MAXIMUM of 10,000 peacekeepers to Iraq. Include Iran, Saudi, Syria, Indonesia and all other muslim nations. We will withdraw one of our soldiers for every peacekeeper they send. If the Muslim world is truely concerned for their Iraqi "brothers", they should jump at this chance.
