Of course studying abroad is the best way to gain fluency. If you live near any Spanish speakers and could spend some time with them a few times a week, you might learn enough to be somewhat conversational. Also, check nearby colleges and universities for some beginner classes. I recommend "Idiot's Guide to Learning Spanish" for an easy to comprehend text. It gives good vocabulary and conversational stuff, but also has an easy to understand pronunciation guide. Watching television in Spanish or listening to Spanish music will help a lot. It may help if you find a movie that you know well in English and watch it in Spanish and also watch the same movie in English, but with Spanish subtitles. A lot depends on how fluent you need to be...The most important thing that you can do is practice, practice, practice! ¡Buena Suerte! (Good Luck!)

You will need to be immersed to learn to speak and understand Spanish fluently in one year. If that is not possible, I highly recommend searching for someone at a community college near you that teaches using the TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) method. You might also be able to sign up for a "Fluency Fast" course this summer or next summer. Check the links below. You could also try using that software that claims the CIA uses them, but it's really expensive and I've never tried it. I have seen the TPRS method work wonders, and while I've never been to a Fluency Fast course, but they use TPRS, which I wholeheartedly believe in. Good luck!

They do not speak Spanish in Span. So do not go there in the first place. My advice is to learn to spell in English beforehand. On the other hand Spain is beautiful this time of year!

1 year is more than enough to learn Spanish!

In any library there are a bunch of books and interactive stuff u can buy...try those...and

Watch Tve or Antena 3 (international Spanish TV channels)

Or rent movies in that language with subtitles in English!...buy Spanish music...

TRY NOT TO TRANSLATE WHAT YOU ARE LEARNING...NEVER SAY...POLLITO CHICKEN GALLINA HEN LAPIZ PENCIL Y PLUMA PEN!

Learn how to say things in Spanish from the beginning!

And one more thing: Spanish...is not the same in Spain...than in any other American countries...is like English...from UK and Australia...

I spent some time in Mexico and they use (quite different) the verbs that I learn while I was living in Madrid! Argentina is also different.

I'm studying German now...a friend of mine is teaching me...10 new words X day! so...why don't you approach someone from Spain???

Learning new languages is so great! Did u know that it actually helps your brain to stay in shape???

Yo hablo español, soy Italiana, he vivido en USA, UK, Francia, España, Canadá y México.

I have lived near Mexico for a few years now and have tried almost everything and the one thing I noticed that worked the best for me was watching the soap operas the univision channel. Then you hear what it is suppose to sound like and you learn from hearing the words again and again, and then you can look them up if you need, and find your meaning.
