The drive imaging suggestions here WILL NOT WORK for you. During installation XP sets up a HAL, which stands for Hardware Abstraction Layer, which is basically a road map of your computer's hardware. If you try to make an image of your system and move it to radically different hardware, such as a laptop, the existing HAL is useless and the system WILL NOT boot and there is no way to change the HAL to something that will work on your laptop. The only way drive imaging software would help you is if you had access to an identical laptop already running XP.

Unfortunately your only legal option is to go ahead and buy another copy of XP. Even if you had the XP CD from your desktop it wouldn't be legal for you to install XP on your laptop using the same CD key and Microsoft would tell you so as soon as you tried to activate XP on your laptop.

You can make an image of your home PC's hard drive using a program such as Norton Ghost 10 or Acronis True Image 9, save the image to CDs or DVDs, and then restore that image onto your laptop's hard drive. Either of those programs will run you from $30 to $70, depending on where you buy them. I suggest Amazon.com's used software sellers for the cheapest price.

If you are upgrading it will have to be off a new disk because when it ask you go register it you will have to put a key in it to activate it and that is the only why for it to work.
