1Ti 4:2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

1Co 9:5 Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?

Act 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

This idea came from the Jews, John the Baptist, Jesus, and the Apostle Paul.

The Jews. The Talmud argues that a person whose “soul is bound up with the Torah and is constantly occupied with it” may remain celibate (Maimonides, Laws of Marriage 15.3). This argument could certainly have been based on the biblical example of Jeremiah, a celibate prophet who was ordered by Yahweh not to marry (Jeremiah 16:1-4). Moreover, the Essenes was a group that was active in Jesus’ time that practiced celibacy and thought by most scholars to be the authors of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

John the Baptist and Jesus are both believed to have been celibate for their entire lives. Some scholars believe that either or both Jesus and John the Baptist were influenced in their celibacy by the example of the Essenes.

The Apostle Paul is explicit about his celibacy (see 1 Cor. 7). There is also evidence in the gospel of Matthew for the practice of celibacy among at least some early Christians, in the famous passage about becoming “eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 19:12).

The concept took many twists and turns over the years and will probably take a few more before Christ returns in glory.

With love in Christ.

Who was married? The Pope or Peter? Anyway, you might want to consider the fact that centuries ago Pope's were not elected and in some cases they were appointed, not because they were so "Godly" or "moral". Some of these wicked Pope's were Pope's because they had money, wealth, influence, and power. Some of them were married with children and, had affairs with whore's. Forgive me but it's the truth. The fact that the Pope, a Bishop, or a Priest cannot marry is a matter of choice and not based on sound Biblical doctrine. Look at what the Bible say's about the qualifications of a "Bishop" also meaning a Pastor or Minister....

Ok, first off, the catholic faith is built more on tradition than on the word of God. you might as well ask why they have to confess to a priest, or why they belive in purgatory, or why they pray to mary and the other saints. none of these things are biblical, they are a mixing of pagan and christian beliefs. The bible says that there is one mediator between God and men and that is christ (1 tim 2:5) but catholics are encouraged not to read and understand the bible for themselves and it has been such for hundreds of years. Latin was first used in mass so that the common people would not be able to hear and understand the word of God thus giving more power to the priests and episcopal heirarchy. in time translations came out that could be read by all, but devout catholics continue to this day to only belive what is told to them by their priest, and not to read and understand for themselves. The answer to your question is that Catholics do not follow the Bible, they follow catolic tradition.

Catholics claim that Petter was the first pope due to a missunderstanding of Matt 16:15-20, and the keys to the kingdom of heaven, they claim that Peter was given the Keys to heaven and could let any one in and that when he died they were passed to the next pope and so on down the line to the current pope.

And just for your own future refrence, petter did not write the book of timmothy, Paul did.

The Popes were married and had children for a long time in church history. We even had a 12 yr old Pope, because the Papacy, like everything else in the Middle Ages was handed from father to the 1st born son. The Church decided at one of it's Synods that they could no longer afford to support families and so the order for priest wide celibacy was issued. It is another man made law, like most rules in most religions. God didn't have alot of rules. The Bible is not the word of God, it is part of the rules of man.

There have actually been many married popes. Even today, a pope could be elected who was already married or had been married and was now a widower. The pope must take a vow of celibacy, however. If you want to know the history of married popes, see the website below. Many popes have even had children, by the way. The most famous is Alexander VI.

when jesus summond his apostles to follow him, they had to leave family and belongings behind them, except for the clothing upon their backs, and devote themselves only onto the Lord. this is why priests and nuns do not marry. this doesn't have to be said or printed. it is something that is just understood. until a Pope changes this. it will continue to remain as is.

if people pay closer attention to what Catholics practice, it is all taken directly from the Bible.

here is a couple of examples:
confessions: Bible says "confess your sins from one to another." a priest takes the vow of silence. which means, what ever you confess to him. he is bound by Christ to keep what you say to himself. his job is not to disgrace you or scold you. his job is to forgive you. where if you tell your sin to someone other, chances are, your sin will be revealed more times over than you care to begin thinking about. the purpose of a confessional is for privacy.

the mass is nothing more than the repeat of the Last Supper: Bible indicates the Last Supper given by Jesus Himself. Bread is the body of Christ...Wine is the blood of Christ. to receive, you are suppose to be rid of sin. to make the spiritualness of it more meaningful. to be of good conscience. however, some churches offer it regardless.

so on and so fourth...

jesus made peter the head of his church...pope # 1, if you will. peter and all popes down the line, were and are the only one allowed to make change on earth and have it reconized by Christ in heaven.

you also have to remember, as with the apostles, and with every other human being...no one was or is perfect (not even you the hypocrit finger pointers out there). never will be in the life time of man.

(the next time that one of you hypocrit pointers point your finger in any direction, it should be to your wrist indicating that you would like to know the time.) meaning, yes, many higher up officials had and have natural human instinct to do at will, even in the name of Christ. which is also why, through the ages, popes, and many others types of religious officials, have come to set better examples and become more humble and people hearted.

pope is just the old latin word for papa...meaning father.

blessings,
~~mafi

Sorry, but the reason the pope can't marry is the same as for a priest. If you are married your off spring can inherit. When, and you got to love this, the church sold dispensation, money to forgive your sins, and things like finger bones of saints they made a lot of cash most which the priest kept. So no marry, no inheritance, boom church gets the money. Simple.

In Catholicism, you must understand, clergymen do not marry because they are supposed to be virgin-like unto their God. You should also understand that the Pope is your conduit to God. This was achieved through the 2nd great schism ( the 1st being when Christianity [orthodox] supplanted Judaism). This arrogant belief that one individual could speak directly to the Creator for all mankind was the original heresy.

The pope is the one that makes the rules as he is God according to the Catholic Church. They do claim that Peter was the first pope but in other places in their encyclopedia even, they admit that the first was not until way later in the second century. As for the other quotes, you can read for yourself.
