I have a parakeet and have owned 2 other ones before it. I'll give you all the tips I can think of. First of all, the bird I have now has been around 6 years and I think two things have helped him stay healthy: taking him out of his cage a lot and feeding him fruits and vegetables. We feed our parakeet, Joey, things like corn, apple, cucumber, and banana. He loves these things and it's good to feed a bird a variety of foods like that. Just avoid 2 foods: avacado and chocolate! We take Joey out at least twice a day and give him lots of attention and love. Please don't let Spanky just sit in his cage. He's a male, so he will probably be talkative and easy to tame. Clean his cage before it gets to the point where you can't see the floor of it! Give him fresh water often. About bathing him, he doesn't need to be bathed, but my bird likes to be splashed with water from the sink. If you let the faucet run, Spanky can sip water from it if he wants. If he starts fluffing his feathers, that means he likes it and is just trying to get the water under his wings. Don't let him get too wet because he might get cold, but let him do this once in a while. And finally, keep his cage in an open area where people will be and make sure he doesn't get a draft. Good luck with your bird, I know you'll love him.

Just borrow some books on parakeets and stuff. Heres a tip : give the parakeet something to chew on like a cuttlefish bone.

Main thing is to clean his cage competely every week. We clean the bottom of our birds cage daily. There are special little metal cannister which you can attach by a twisty tie, that keeps all mites and other type of things that can effect your bird from infesting your bird or he cage. They cost about $7 and last for six months or longer. To bathe our bird she likes a fine mist sprayer, do make sure when you do this your bird isn't by an aircondition or fan (birds can get a cold or sick). Make sure you give your bird filter water, the cholorine and chemicals in the water can make some birds sick. We give our bird vitamins which we add a couple drops to her water. If you do let your bird fly around make sure all window and doors are closed, it's the number one way people loose their birds (especially around small children). Feed him a good food and make sure to give him things to play with they need to stimulate their little brains like any other animal. Something he can climb, etc. We have a conure and we have a little fleece tent in her cage she loves to sleep in there and it keeps us from having to cover her cage. When she's tired she goes in there and sleeps. This was added after we had her for a couple of years and she loves it. We have two so we can take it one out and wash every week. It dries quick being fleece, plus if there are any drafts in your home in the winter months this also keeps them warm. Now don't worry and enjoy your new pet.

They make small oval shaped plastic "bird baths" that you can put at the bottom of the cage once a week or so. Just remember to clean the paper after the bath is done! Good luck!

i have a parakeet. Its name is Kairi.
Well to take care of it you have to:
See that it always has food. (seeds, bread, and water)
Take it out of its cage at least once a day to let it exercise. (mine loves to be out, and it hides under my bed)
Keep a clean cage.
Play a lot with it, so it recognizes you, and loves you.
Always talk to him
If needed clean it with a clean wet cloth, preferably warm.
Always love it.
Good luck. If you like my advice, or need anything else, feel free to contact me.
