Common mammal stunning methods:
* Captive bolt stunning – A “pistol” is set against the animal’s head and a metal rod is thrust into the brain.Shooting a struggling animal is difficult, and the rod often misses its mark.16
* Electric stunning – Current produces a grand mal seizure; then the throat is cut. According to industry consultant Temple Grandin, PhD, “Insufficient amperage can cause an animal to be paralyzed without losing sensibility.”17
* Ritual slaughter – Animals are fully conscious when their carotid arteries are cut. This is supposed to cause unconsciousness within seconds, but because of blood flow through the vertebral arteries in the back of the neck, some animals can remain conscious as they bleed for up to a minute.18 Additionally, Temple Grandin, PhD notes “Unfortunately, there are some plants which use cruel methods of restraint such as hanging live animals upside down.”19 This can cause broken bones as the heavy animal hangs by a chain attached to one leg.

Most people would flinch and be revolted with work which involves hurting and killing other beings with such brutality. Not to mention that it is grossly unsanitary and very dangerous as well. There are exceptions however, and some people may actually seek opportunities for this kind of "work." Notable amongst those would be sadists who actually enjoy inflicting pain on others. And working in a slaughterhouse provides fertile opportunities to hurt without impunity. Another exception would be psychopaths, those who lack empathy and sensitivity towards others. Finally, those who have no other option. Immigrants, the very poor etc. -- basically people who have no power or voice. If one is starving and the only option available to make a living is to kill, they will take it on, however reluctantly. As we know, most people have very few ethical qualms with killing animals for human consumption and see nothing problematic with it. They feel like they are just doing a job (which not too many want to) for the greater good. People put in this position, while they may have some sensitivity to begin with, very quickly become caught up in the mechanics of their job. Slicing or stunning is just a flick of the wrist for them, nothing more. Their sensitivities get eroded overnight. These "workers" will either: a. quit (slaughterhouses have the highest turnover rate of any industry). b. slowly disintegrate (by taking drugs or expressing their frustration on someone else like a family member and of course, the animals). Regardless of whether one actually works there or not, these places exist. And their effects seep insidiously into society and us, whether we are aware of it or not, whether we acknowledge it or not.

The only thing I have to add is there is one cow that stays at the slaughterhouse called the Judas Cow. It's difficult to get the cows to the killing floor after the transport to the slaughterhouse, which leaves them scared and confused. So the Judas Cow, whom they trust, leads them there and then steps out of the way at the last second.

Having lived in a VERY rural area, I can tell you the\at the most common method of butchering cows is an iron rod shot through their brain. They die quicker than their nerves can send a pain signal to the brain. Whatever your video is, it is either misinformed or it has taken the WORST scenario in America and called it "every farm ever" to spread propaganda. And also, if everyone just dropped everything and stopped eating meat, most economies would crash. It has to be a very slow transition. Even then, this type of propaganda just angers those who eat meat. You aren't going to convince them through this kind of stuff. You'll have to convince them through health facts regarding meat. And according to the Milgram Experiment, I probably could do MUCH worse than what is in your video.

Growing up in the boonies we got to see a lot of those things. My father took me to a birthday party once on a farm that raises and butchered cows..I asked the man how they did it. According to him: They shoot to cow in the head but this does not kill them, only stuns them..the cows then have their throats slit to bleed out while they are still alive. Pretty horrible huh? You don't even want to know about veal. I will never touch the stuff.

It is up to the packing plant or butcher to choose a number of methods set forth by the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act. The Humane Slaughter Act, or the Humane Methods of Livestock Slaughter Act, is a United States federal law designed to protect food animals during the moment of their slaughter. It was passed in 1958.
"No method of slaughtering or handling in connection with slaughtering shall be deemed to comply with the public policy of the United States unless it is humane. Either of the following two methods of slaughtering and handling are hereby found to be humane:
(a) in the case of cattle, calves, horses, mules, sheep, swine, and other livestock, all animals are rendered insensible to pain by a single blow or gunshot or an electrical, chemical or other means that is rapid and effective, before being shackled, hoisted, thrown, cast, or cut; or
(b) by slaughtering in accordance with the ritual requirements of the Jewish faith or any other religious faith that prescribes a method of slaughter whereby the animal suffers loss of consciousness by anemia of the brain caused by the simultaneous and instantaneous severance of the carotid arteries with a sharp instrument and handling in connection with such slaughtering."
The USDA reguraly inspects plants to be sure they follow these guidelines. I have been in many plants and I know for a fact that they do inspections.

It's pretty gnarly. They walk them through a shoot in a single file line, shoot them in the head with a bolt that knocks them out, and proceed to slaughter them while they are unconscious. The process is supposed to be humane, though problems occur when the animal is not completely stunned and is slaughtered while still conscious.
