Your statement "They were trying to start a free country were religion and the government would not intwine with each other AT ALL." is inaccurate. Historically, while the founders made certain that the federal government could not institute a national religion, the states were free to vote in the establisment of religious guidelines. Here's a few examples:
The Congregational Church was the official established church of Massachusetts until 1833, but from 1780-1833 Massachusetts had a system which required every man to belong to a church... Until 1877 the New Hampshire Constitution required members of the State legislature to be of the Protestant religion.
These were in effect while the founders were still alive. Obviously, they were within the framework of the relationship between church and state as defined in the Constitution, since the guys who wrote it didn't make a fuss. The complete seperation of church and state is a relatively recent movement.
I'm ok if you want to try and 'vote God out of the government'--this is a democracy. And I promise to stop revising history to support my view---as long as you promise to stop too.

It is fundamental to the current structure in the US that we recognize our country was founded on Christian beliefs. In fact out christian beliefs are key to keeping our culture and government grounded and well framed. Without a moral foundation countries will spiral out of control. Now having a christian foundation does not mean everyone has to practice that faith and in fact our christian faith has allowed for more tolerance than any other set of faiths in the world today.
Communism and many dictatorships are formed void of faith and history has proven them wrong. They had purged faith so that man became God. (not good)
The one key element in our constitution and our pledge is the recognition of a God (what ever God that is) and the acceptance that what we do on earth will be judged at a later point. It helps frame moral judgment and curtail immorality. The Roman empire is an example of a culture that imploded because man became gods.
Just my 2 cents:)
P.S. The ten commandments are not a bad thing... no matter what faith you are they are a great set of rules to live by.

100% agreement, this country was founded by a group of people who were smarter than anyone living today. They knew that state sponsored religion only guarantees that some religious nutcase rise sto the top..... Many are under the FALSE assumption that being religious = morality and only could be good for this country. There are just as many religious sickos as there are sickos at large.
Only zealous separation of church and state will keep this country a democracy (or at least what passes for democracy in this day and age) and a theocracy calling for crusades all over again.....

you're maximum ideal in putting forward this isn't a Christian usa. in spite of the indisputable fact that the framers of the structure were guided by technique of their beliefs in God and that unfold to the State constitutions besides. as an celebration, the be conscious "God" seems contained in the preamble in 8 state constitutions. In 4 states, the "ideal Ruler of the Universe" is used instead. by technique of a procedures, the most everyday divine reference in a preamble is "Almighty God." This seems contained in the preamble of 30 state constitutions. In some states, the state structure does no longer have a preamble. in spite of the indisputable fact that, a divine reference should be got here upon contained in the religion clauses contained in the bill of rights in each and each and every celebration. there is just one state structure which has a preamble that does no longer have a divine reference of any type. it truly is the structure of Oregon. yet right here the words "Almighty God" seem contained in the state faith clauses. those are the position a lot of human beings get wondered on the concept of a Christian usa. With this stuff in suggestions, How is it any distinct for a Christian to assert this is a Christian usa than for a secularist or Atheist to assert it isn't? No distinction in any respect. Oddly adequate, with respects to Darwins concept, both are maximum ideal as an workout of freedom.

I love this post and the repsonses with quotes from famous people in United States history. Maybe atheists and people fed up with God could accept that a creator made everything that exists if you blind religious faithful would use compassion and reason for a change. In fact, you cannot have compassion without reason and logic. Reason and logic propel one toward love and compassion.
I think what most atheists and agnostics are against are the billions of people holding onto man-made myth as some sort of truth. If there is proof of anything, it's that for thousands of years men have created ridiculous stories to explain the world around them. Stories to explain lightning. Stories to explain missing loved ones. Stories to explain death. People have believed them.
Science is not the art is destroying God. Early science expected to prove his existence. What happened was unexpected.
By studying human behavior and what we can observe, we've found that there are things written in Holy Books that are simply untrue, hateful, and contradictory. We've also found that creating stories to explain the world is not only real, but part of every day of existence.
The world is in danger because of the religious, not the atheists and agnostics. If an atheist blows up the world, he destroys everything he is and every can be. If a religious zealot destroys it, it can be in the name of God and the name of eternal heavenly life.
I believe the non-religious have a greater need to treat the world and each other as precious because it's all we have. We will inherently be more loving and accepting because we use our minds. We're having the toughest time in this world because we need you to open your hearts and eyes.
The founders of this country recognized how completely ridiculous choosing one fable to believe as doctrine was. If they thought otherwise, they would have created a nation based on one religion. They would not have dared to create something against God. They realized that people can be taken care of and nurtured by compassion alone. It's the scared, blind religious faithful who are taking this country backwards because they're starting to take over.
Many religious groups have discreet programs and efforts to infiltrate the United States government positions to make this country an theocracy in disguise. It's already happening. They are the ones using deceit to get what they want.

God loves you inspite of yourself. God created this world and universe and everything in it. You don't want to live in a country under God, then move to a third world country. No one is forcing you to stay. This country is more peaceful than any other country because it is covered by God. Like it or not, God does love you, and it saddens Him to hear that you don't love Him. If we had less people in this country that's hearts are so hate filled like yours is, it would be a great place to live in peace and love. Oh...
but that day is coming soon, when Jesus destroys this earth with all it's hateful non believers who follow satan, and gives this world back to the Chrisitans!! Praise God!!!!!

Putting GOD in the government is liberty!!! Think about this, for example, if the statements "Thou shalt not steal." and "Thou shalt not kill." were NOT part of our society, how free would you feel? You would continuously be looking over your shoulder, suspicious of everyone that walks by, hoping that this person(s) would not rob you and then kill you and walk away from the crime scene without anyone saying a word because you thought GOD didn't´t belong in our government.
Sorry friend, civilized nations hold true to the Ten Commandments. Otherwise, they wouldn't be civilized.

In a sermon of October 1831, Episcopalian minister Bird Wilson said, "Among all of our Presidents, from Washington downward, not one was a professor of religion, at least not of more than Unitarianism." The Bible? Here is what our Founding Fathers wrote about Bible-based Christianity: Thomas Jefferson: I have examined all the known superstitions of the world, and I do not find in our particular superstition of Christianity one redeeming feature. They are all alike founded on fables and mythology. Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned. What has been the effect of this coercion? To make one half the world fools and the other half hypocrites; to support roguery and error all over the earth. Jefferson again: Christianity...(has become) the most perverted system that ever shone on man. ...Rogueries, absurdities and untruths were perpetrated upon the teachings of Jesus by a large band of dupes and importers led by Paul, the first great corrupter of the teaching of Jesus. More Jefferson: The clergy converted the simple teachings of Jesus into an engine for enslaving mankind and adulterated by artificial constructions into a contrivance to filch wealth and power to themselves...these clergy, in fact, constitute the real Anti-Christ. Jefferson's word for the Bible? Dunghill. John Adams: Where do we find a precept in the Bible for Creeds, Confessions, Doctrines and Oaths, and whole carloads of other trumpery that we find religion encumbered with in these days? Also Adams: The doctrine of the divinity of Jesus is made a convenient cover for absurdity. Adams signed the Treaty of Tripoli. Article 11 states: The Government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion. Here's Thomas Paine: I would not dare to so dishonor my Creator God by attaching His name to that book (the Bible). Among the most detestable villains in history, you could not find one worse than Moses. Here is an order, attributed to 'God' to butcher the boys, to massacre the mothers and to debauch and rape the daughters. I would not dare so dishonor my Creator's name by (attaching) it to this filthy book (the Bible). It is the duty of every true Deist to vindicate the moral justice of God against the evils of the Bible. Accustom a people to believe that priests and clergy can forgive sins...and you will have sins in abundance. The Christian church has set up a religion of pomp and revenue in pretended imitation of a person (Jesus) who lived a life of poverty. Finally let's hear from James Madison: What influence in fact have Christian ecclesiastical establishments had on civil society? In many instances they have been upholding the thrones of political tyranny. In no instance have they been seen as the guardians of the liberties of the people. Rulers who wished to subvert the public liberty have found in the clergy convenient auxiliaries. A just government, instituted to secure and perpetuate liberty, does not need the clergy.
oh yeah and Abraham Lincoln: "The Bible is not my book nor Christianity my profession. I could never give assent to the long, complicated statements of Christian dogma."

"all men were CREATED equal"
-preamble to the constitution of the United States. (Captitals mine)
The American government was set up so that the government can have no control or effect on religion. not so that religion has no control over the government. if anything it was ment to have a great influence on the government.
The right is Freedom OF Religion, not Freedom FROM Religion.
thanks praying for you
have a nice day
