be patient and do a little at a time- you will be amazed how little money it takes to make the improvements you want. if you have major repairs to make like a new roof or something like that, then go to your local better business beauro to get a list of contractors whom might be able to help.

In Maine they have a state run program that insulates houses of low income people. They also repair or replace windows. You don't have to be on welfare to qualify.

The electric company will insulate your water heater and hot water pipes and give you energy efficient light bulbs for free.

There should be similar programs where you live. Check your state's website if they have one.

If you want new floors or siding you're on your own.Work two jobs or get your budget under control.
For example, If you quit smoking you could save enough per month to pay for materials and do your own work.

I know this sounds like a cop out, but the local welfare office might be able to help you. My sister just bought a home, and a program through the welfare office paid for any plumbing repairs up to $1800 (she had to get three estimates, and the lowest one was chosen).
