Haha! I love the buddy pass comment. First of all, you would get no where on a buddy pass during the holiday's. Those are space available anyway and they block any buddy pass travel during that time. Check to see if there are any convoy's first. Then check American or Delta depending on where in Idaho you are flying from. You can get a military discount if you are active duty. You just have to show your active military status ID. Book as early as possible to get the best rates, 30 days or more. The military rate may or may not be cheaper, but its worth checking out. You may have to call Reservations or go to the Ticket Counter to get the Military discounted price.
Good luck and I hope you can find a good price to make it home for Christmas.
Shoot me an e-mail and tell me the cities you are departing/arriving to and from as well as the dates. I can help steer you in the direction you would need to go.

The military has worked out special deals with the major airlines. I believe you get discounts with Delta, American and United, you may also get a discounted rate with Southwest. Check the airline websites, and talk to you commanding officer, he should be able to get you information on how to get standby tickets with your military ID at a fraction of the cost, you can also fly standby on military air convoys. If you're going into Southern ID, Delta may be your best bet from TX.

Do you know anybody that works for an airline? They may be able to give you a buddy pass. With that you only have to pay taxes & fees. Or do the farewatcher thing with Travelocity...where you enter where you want to fly from & to...and the maximum amount you want to spend...and they'll send you an email when it goes below that amount.
