I've managed 6 months, but I'm back to about 10 cigarettes a week. Especially when drinking.
If you have quit and it's permanent, please tell me all about how you did it.

I have to agree with the cold turkey approach.
When I quit, I had to quit drinking at the same time. The habits were too closely bonded together. I also gave up coffee for a while for the same reason.
Give yourself a couple months to get past the cravings before you start drinking again, that is definitely the hardest bond to break.

Remember the way you feel like Cr@p while you are going through withdrawal and use that memory to keep you from starting again.
If you can keep yourself from taking that first drag, you're quit.

Good Luck, I'm rooting for you.

There are always nicorrette patches and gum and stuff like that, but at the age of 17 you should be able to do it. Im 19 and have smoked on and off since I was 12 years old (shocking i know!) but finally quit not long ago. I didnt use anything, I went cold turkey. The only thing I did do was ensure I had gum on me all the time (not nicorrette or anything, just normal gum) so that i was distracted... then the money i saved on ciggies gave me more and more incentive to continue not smoking. Then i treated myself to a night out with my girls with the money I saved. All about willpower! Good Luck! You can do it haha.

I quit six weeks ago and to be honest I don't really miss the damn things. I finished my last pack over a few days and then just quit. That first night was the worst. My way of coping with it was to drink so much that I passed out within a couple of hours. Maybe not every ones cup of tea, but it sure helped me sleep through that horrible, horrible night. After that I started gaining more and more self control each day that went by. Every now and then I do get the urge to smoke, but I just try to occupy myself with something. Yahoo! Answers is one of my ways and I've also found video games to be a very helpful distraction. I think that everyone reaches a certain point when they've had enough coughing, smelling, health risks and exorbitant prices.

COLD TURKEY.
And this was before they invented the patch, the gum and all that stuff. I just gave it up and anytime I felt like I needed a smoke, I ate sunflower seeds, or chewed gum, or ate JuJuBee's. Make sure you always have stuff like that in your house, backpack, purse, house, car, office, etc...

Good Luck!

I used nicorrettes, but the drinking thing is something you have to give up for a while, as that and nicorrettes won't work(it might make you ill), and drinking and smoking go together.
