Also called Hansen's Disease. Once upon a time there were a group of individuals on an island in Hawaii with this disease.

Just like it's relative Tuberculosis, this bacteria still exists and infects individuals in third world countries.

Yes, it is often carried but armadillos , and people that deal with them from time to time end up with it . Also in some parts of the world there still are people dying from it.

Yes, it effects the nerves,but there are much better treatments know
to prevent the injuries from getting infected.
