I think there are 2 ways to answer your question.
First of all, and I am speaking from my own experience, most 15/16 year old girls don´t tell their parents the truth. I dated guys that were usually 4 to 6 years older when I was that age. Teenage girls can be swept off their feet really easily by guys that say the right thing. They all dress older, and most get away with looking older too. And now my second point of view...
I have 2 girls, one is 11 and the thought of her dating anyone older when she hits 15/16 scares me! In many families both parents work and the lack of supervision is usually taken advantage of. And for single parent families its even more difficult to keep on top of everything. I am not making excuses, but I think that in alot of cases its really that the parent or parents don´t even know its happening. Whether a lack of concern or believing that their daughter was raised to know better, it doesn´t matter, it´s happening.

Some parents have lost control of their children.
1. A parent who has been dis-empowered by the nanny state can no longer discipline the child to live right. Consider the consequences when a Dept. of Social Services case worker says to a child of a single mother on welfare, "If your parent lays a hand on you, call me at this number."
2. A parent who is addicted, to alcohol or crack cocaine for example, has abdicated the role of parent in the family. The child must assume the mantle of authority by default, regardless of the child's ability to exercise that authority over himself or herself. Some crack mothers even rent their daughters as prostitutes to feed their own addiction. There are parents, in the United States, who sell their children to people they have never met.
3. A parent who has sexually abused a child can thereafter be blackmailed by the child, who then lives without restraint. The child has taken over the reins.
4. The past experience of the parent has convinced him, "My child is going to do his or her own thing, no matter what, and only prison or maybe the military is going to straighten him or her out anyway. So why waste my breath?"
5. The parent is worn out, burned out, and just doesn't care any more. "Let the rebellious brat die."
6. The child has been in Juvenile Detention or foster care long enough to learn the ropes and the escape hatches from parental authority.
7. The child is corrupt. The child will not heed parental discipline, and the common results are prostitution, slavery, disease, death, and destruction.
There are more causes, but these account for most cases.

Do the parents really know? I am convinced that just because you give birth to these kids doesn't mean these people actually parent them. It is so much easier to check out and let the kids do what they want. It is sad because that is what is wrong with today's teenagers and twenties. I would never let my daughter date anyone that much older than her. there is a huge age and maturity difference. If she is 16, the oldest person she can date will be 18 and even then, I'd have to know him.

No way. I did, and I know people who did, and it turned about really, really, really bad. And, it's illegal, at least it is in NC. If they have sex, or any form of sexual anything, I don't care if it's just words, and the state finds out, whether the parents prosecute or not, the state will. So, no, I would definitely not let my daughter date a guy that much older.

some parents trust their children more than others. It depends on how much you trust your 16 year old daughter.

love is strange anyway, and you can't stop two people falling in love, my personal opinion is that between 5-10 years looks and sounds o.k, but i think its twisted when a 16+ y/o is dating men as old as there dads/grandads/uncles etc etc.

Hell no. I think 16 is too young for dating exclusivly. Like I told my daughter's first boyfriend, You stick it in my daughter, I stick it in you. Seemed to work.
