kimberbee - i dint know that the meaning behind starry night was that the town is protected by god and everything .. beautiful ...

ckswife .. when you say 'The Scream is like a full blast on a pipe organ - yeah, it'll get your attention!' ure kinda right there

ginger1 - i just loved your description of starry night ...the power of words... !

Zrk... you too are right about Starry nights being crazy and obessive ..the mania that went into was true ... every bit of it :- ( it was never meant to be a regular pretty 'landscapy' painting

MAGICAL WHIMSIE -- You deserve best answer Right On ... for just this one line ..that sums up Starry Night

"How much pain did he (vqan gogh) pour in that painting! I guess that Van Gogh was feeling Munch's image inside of him, but reflected the feelings in beauty rather than ugliness.

They are both very powerful images and I love both of them because they evoke the same feeling.

Remembering that Van Gogh painted (or finished) Starry Night the same day he committed suicide makes me have a powerful sense of longing. How much pain did he pour in that painting! I guess that Van Gogh was feeling Munch's image inside of him, but reflected the feelings in beauty rather than ugliness.

These paintings are saying the same thing, they speak the same emotions, isolation, pain, despair. One is more literal than the other. One leaves us with the rawness of those feelings, while the other only the energy in beauty. There can be despair in beauty too.

I guess that I can not make up my mind, I love them both and if I could afford them I would hang them side by side on my wall.

I'm with tolnec1. I have more of a reaction to the Munch but Starry Night draws me in and entertains me and soothes me. The Scream is like a full blast on a pipe organ - yeah, it'll get your attention! Starry Night is like soft harp music that lulls you and you can listen to indefinitely.

This will sound odd - but I find that Starry Night has much more emotion pouring out of it. The colors and the brushwork especially , it just seems to vibrate the more you look at it. The deep watery blues contrasting with the yellows...I do appreciate the scream and the jarring emotions it calls up, but Starry Night is more lyrical to me.

Starry Night, more originality by Van Gogh.

The Scream. Starry Night is too crazy with all of those little blobs of paint. I don't know how people find it to be peaceful with the obsessive quality of the brushwork. All I see is the mania that went into it.

I get a much more visceral response to The Scream; but if I were to put something on my wall, it would be Starry Night.

Munch was on an angst bandwagon in his day and The Scream is such a cliched painting all young art students admire because they don't actually know anything about it - yeuch!

Why are you making me choose????
I guess Starry Night - the colours are beautiful and the whole painting's alive.
The Scream's fantastic too, but as some git's nicked it, I guess none of us will be having it!

Hmmm difficult one that as they're both very good but The Scream still freaks me out after all these years so I guess it would have to be that one... just thinking about it now and I'm sure I'll have nightmares :-(
