Webster defines a patriot as one who loves and defends his country with ZEAL. Zeal is defined as fanaticism, or extreme enthusiam.

I think your question is way off base. To equate Patriotism with being dangerous is a warped view I wish some teacher did not put in your head. It is that will to support and believe in something that has led to our survival. Those who are weak or act like sheep, get put on a plate next to the mashed potatoes.....

If we took your view The USA would still be British.

Patriots are not dangerous. Fanatics are dangerous.

What's the difference? A patriot thinks their country/culture/religion is wonderful and wants to defend it against those who would destroy it. A patriot is willing to die to defend their country/culture/religion, but would prefer not to have to fight.

A fanatic thinks their country/culture/religion is the absolute best, and anyone who thinks differently is a threat and should be destroyed. A fanatic is willing to be a martyr (or at least to recruit martyrs) to kill others, and prefers to fight to show their devotion.

Patriots are fine. Fanatics are scary. And unfortunately, they can be found in every country and every religion.

The short answer and the long answer both have to be qualified. Yes, fanatics who would impose their wills and their beliefs on others will always be a danger to world AND local peace because people like me will resist them with all our might. One of my favorite quotes is "Death to all tyrants!" That includes the religious as well as the secular.

The long answer is the same with more words.

I would say necessary.

If you honestly have no beliefs you hold dear enough to kill or be killed over, then you will be a subject to someone elses wills.
