This is going to sound sick, and I wouldn't give my 11-year-old kid a beer, but I'm pretty sure the legal drinking age only has to do with buying alcohol. If you serve it in your own home, like many families traditionally serve wine every night with dinner, no problems. I think all they could get you on is "contributing to the delinquency of a minor", and the case sounds pretty weak if you are a good parent otherwise. Of course, I'm not a lawyer, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

As a side note, once he gets a little older (say 17 or 18), and the drinking question comes from his own mouth, I have considered letting my son get fall-down drunk, under my supervision, with the hopes that the resulting hangover would act as a deterrent for a while.

I'd have no problem letting my 11 year old *taste* it, but not give him a full beer. Kids want things they can't have, and most kids won't like it anyway, so a sip can't hurt anything, but it will take out some of the mystique.

At that age, i would say definately. First time my lips hit a bottle of wine was when i was 6 from my uncles in Italy. Wouldn't you like to have your kid learn about drinking and resposibilities from you or would you rather pick him up from the local police station after hanging out with his friends at a party. earlier they learn the better. Screw the law, if it's your kid, in your own home, dont you think you have to right to allow your child to have a beer.

My parents instated a unlocked cabinet rule. I could have as much as I wanted as long as I stayed home, and could not have any friends over. The worst I did till my trip to Canada (five drinks in total) was take a sip of my daddy's beer, when I got it out of the fridge for him.

Actually, there's nothing wrong with it. Kids start drinking beer in countries such as Germany when they're 4 or 5.

Why even joke about it, he will have issues soon enough if he truly starts at a young age!
