The Crucible is is a 54-hour endurance excercise carried out during Marine Corps Recruit Training. It is a culmination of all of the skills that have been taught over the previous twelve weeks. When I went through the crucible, there was a twelve mile march (no hills on Parris Island), to the camp area, where we dumped our gear, and started the training. Included was pugil sticks, hand to hand combat, field maneuvers w/ live ammunition, rescue, team building problems. Recruits were given two MRE's and an extra to be split with their rack mate.

Once in the field, there were four hours scheduled for sleep both nights, but there was always so much to do, that you were lucky to get a nap, even if you didn't have fire watch. I slept one hour the first night, none the second, and whatever cat naps I could catch, including on the march (yes, it is possible). Over the course of the 54 hours, we marched over 36 miles, returning to the parade ground at sun-up the third day, carrying several members of the platoon, so that we could all say we finished (all 68 members of my platoon finished). The proudest moment of my life was standing in front of the Iwo Jima statue on the parade gorund, and the drill instructor that I hated the most said "Congratulations, Marine." as he handed me my Eacgle, Globe, and Anchor

The crucible is the final training evolution before recruits are given the title Marine. It consists of a 10 mile force march out to the training grounds for a four day training stint that requires them to use what they've learned over the previous few months. Most if not all of the activities require team work and dependence on other members within the squad in order to successfuly be completed. If my memory serves me right, I think they are given three meals to last them the entire time. Upon returning from the Crucible they treated to a "warrior breakfast" which in my opinion was nothing special, and they are given thier Marine insignia and allowed the wear the uniforms of the Marine Corps.

they take a long hike up a heal, camp out for a week and the drill intructors give them minimum food, play war games with each other and learn to survive in a time of war on your own in enemy territory.
