yeah, i'm with oreo! just kidding. i am white so i have no say-so in this arena, but it does seem that these organizations' times have come and gone. to truely get rid of racism you have to stop referring to people's races, so these groups would have to look at things a different way and begin inviting different races into the org , maybe morph into a group that opposes racism in all forms, e.g. anti-jew, anti-muslim, etc.

What would you like the names changed to? If the names are changed but the content is still the same, would that make a difference to you? Are you really that bothered by the names? How does it make you feel? What does it make you think? How does it affect your life? Can America really be a country without divisions? There are many different cultures in America that each have different needs that can be best met by those who understand that culture. Do you think that it is just the names that cause divisions or the circumstances that led to the creation of these things?
You can change a name but can you change what is in the hearts and minds of man.

Well, you've made a good point, there, and if there were anything for a caucasian group, you'd hear peopele scream bloody murder about it. You don't see a 'white people channel', or a 'national association for the advancement of white people', or anything like that. Well you do, but usually it's some kind of really racist hate group, like the neo-nazis or something. I think in a truly 'color blind' society, we wouldn't need to have that stuff, but some feel it's important to advance and promote the interests of minorities, or people that consider themselves minorities etc., or people that just plain don't feel like filling out a job application...I don't know, not being all-knowing, but I do feel we've done some Really Stupid Things in the name of diversity, and it's time to abolish some of these bad past practices...'wounded bird' politics just makes a Big Mess of things for everybody, If you're in a wheelchair, I'm all for giving you a break, but if you take a Good Hard Look at most of these special programs, there's people that don't really quite belong in them, america doesn't need more potential welfare recipients, we need more people that can hold down a job. and not cry about it. I think the Magic Answer on this one is to encourage more people to open up businesses, and cut the welfare to a bare minimum...start standing people up and telling em they don't NEED special treatment, they don't NEED welfare, they need to get MOVING. That's the secret of success, get MOVING and DO.

unfortunatly I dont think it will completely go away, I wish it would ,but there will always be people that hate other people, and not just racism but also beause they are from other cultures or religions or because of memories of past conflicts. In south Africa was a lot of racial hatred that was nurtured by the church and politics ,who needed the white people to hate each other . With the coming into power of Nelson Mandella, the church publically appologised for instigating this racial hatred, and politicians did as as well, Today it is bad taste or unfasionable to be a racist and also for reasons of safety. And many people that before outwardly were racist are now the biggest of friends with their black brothers. unfortunately in some cases ,behind closed doors or in segregated comunities the racial hatred persists. And this can be from both sides there also being black people that hate the white people However in general there is a lot of hope and many people that before could not be friends ,even if they wanted to,because of politics and peer presure (sometimes at the risk of their lives) ,can now get on together safely and South Africa is not called the Rainbow Nation for nothing. (i was on the side of the ANC during apartheid days and have some experience) Viva

"A Rose By Any Other Name Would Smell as Sweet"
There was some debate back in the 1970s regarding changing the name to "The Organization for the Advancement of Black People" but it was decided against because of tradition and the overall silliness of the reasoning... they are still the same race of people whether you call them black, colored, or African American.... I just refer to them as 'the cool people'.

Racism will allways be around as long as the assholes on all sides of the color barriers keep teaching their children to be distrustful of anyone or anything that is different. Unless every person of every color makes an honest effort to be good to each other, equality among the races is just a pipe dream. Racism isn't born, folks, it's taught. I have a two-year-old son. You know what he hates? Naps! End of list.

no we cannot. My question is what if white people had WET (white entertainment television)? The NAACP would be all over that one. I think we need the NAAWP.....lets see how long that would last. Black people are just as involved in racism as whites, so I dont feel responsible in the least. If you dont want to feel separate, then stop separating yourselves.

Names are just names, I don't think they do much harm. And most people these days don't even know what NAACP stands for.
I think much more harm is done by government social programs. It's hard to convince the entire population that everyone is equal when the government is telling everyone that African-Americans need lots of special help to keep up with everyone else.

I agree that if there was the WET channel or a group called NAAWP, hell would be raised. I'd like to do it just to see if Jesse Jackson would implode.
It's odd, though. In some ways it seems we have breached all sorts of racial barriers. When I was in high school (more years ago than I care to think of) a white girl who dated a black guy was culled from the "herd". Now. you see this mixed sort of romance all the time, and most folks don't bat an eye. On the other hand, you have whites who would like nothing more than to kill all n*ggers and blacks who'd like nothing more than to kill all the crackers. My guess is that if the "special interest" groups would step out of it, things would settle down all on their own.
I can dream, can't I?

It's unlikely we'll ever overcome racism but even if we do i don't think it's organisations like that that are fuelling it. If you want to attack anyone for segregation leading to rascism try the black panthers, black nation of Islam or the KKK.
