Absolutely, because it isn't an academic process, you cannot demonstrate Britishness by the passing of an examination. Feeling British, is a function of the emotions. You have to demonstrate that you are a patriot daily, by what you think, feel, and do.

By reducing Britishness to the passing of a test, the government have cynically provided themselves with the opportunity to re-define what constitutes Britishness, in order to complement their left wing agenda. This demonstrates that they, themselves, are not patriotic. Every true Brit. knows instinctively what it is to be British; it is not something you have to learn, you acquire it from your early years onward. In fact, if you tried to reduce it to a tick list, you would undermine it.

The very fact that you feel able to say, based on the passing of an exam, that you are more British than a lot of British people you work with, proves my point.

The Government knew, when they were canvessing for opinions on what constituted Britishness, that they would not get a consensus on it, because as I stated above, it cannnot be reduced to a tick list. Nonetheless, the government used this apparent lack of agreement ( which was inevitable) to rewrite the script ( in their own image) as to what constitutes Britishness.

So, I do not think that it is a money making scam, ( the cost of administrating it would probably exceed the modest income) I think instead, that it is a cynical political exercise by a PC ridden left wing government. It proves absolutely nothing.

I think what is more important is:
A pledge of allegance to the country in which you are seeking citizenship.
Compulsory enrollment on a part-time state-funded written & spoken English language course.
Entitlement to social welfare benefits only after having paid taxes for a year or two.
To pledge to gain an understanding & respect for existing culture, conventions & law, rather than rigidly carry on thinking & doing as you did in your previous country.
Never to communicate in your native language in public or expect the standard edition of publications for the general public to show any other language than English.
I thought many of the example questions were irrelevant or too specific and I'd bet a majority of life-long British citizens wouldn't get them all correct. There should be no charge for the test: it shouldn't cost much to administer anyhow if it was computer-based and held at an existing facility where your identity can be checked before taking the test by yourself (like a driving test center maybe).

It's about a world view and not about a place someone occupies on earth.

Britishness, like any other nationality is an ideology and an ideology is that which makes the culturally constructed appear normal. Therefore it is very difficult for a person to recognize the traits of a nation from within. (The best some retards can come up with is warm beer and cricket). Many Brits cannot recognize these traits until they are taken away.

I dont get how in Britain Middle Eastern minorities refuse to assimilate into British and Western culture. I think it is wrong. In America immigrants assimilatw into society and culture far better. They preserve their own culture in the privacy of their families and homes. Yet they are proud to be Ameican, embrace American beliefs and ideals and participate well in society.

I think Britain should definitely seperate religion and state.

I have both an Irish and a British passport. Didnt have to take any tests.

Im not a muppet LR. I did'nt say you were Asian. I was making a general comment about British Immigration. Do you mean you are Souf Afikan you paranoid idiot

Sweet... I'm totally for an Americanness test! It'd be kind of fun to weed out the people with common sense, from the others who should feel guilty because they can't answer "1492" or "John Wilkes Booth" to some really basic questions.

Is this 'Britishness' thing mandatory for all citizens, or something? I smell more than a scam... I smell a desperate government!

I agree with Kevin C, it's probably not the best idea but something like that is needed for immigrants so they can integrate better into our society. My husbands a bus driver in an area highly populated by immigrants and they ask him questions in a foreign language and expect him to understand! Enrolling in an English course should be compulsory and not funded by the taxpayer.

I would charge more - possibly in the region of about £50,000. Also, make the questions really difficult.
I really hate Britain, I hate Britishness, I hate the idea of a British test but if we can make money from it then it makes Britishness something worthwhile !!!
p.s. I was born in Britain but hate to call myself British, so I would probably fail the test, I would gladly pay to fail the test.

No I think it is a great idea & if people can't pass it they should be booted out. NOBODY from another country is MORE BRITISH THAN ME!

How bloody rude. Typical arrogant South African Attitude.

When does your visa run out? Don't tell me you have been given indefinate leave to remain? Your ancestors left the place, what do you want to come here for? Get lost.

No it is not,if you are British,or if you aspire to British citizenship, then you should be able to both speak and understand the English language to a reasonable degree [fluency not required].Above all your first loyalty should be to your Country, your religious faith is a matter for your personal choice but should not conflict with your first loyalty to your country of birth or adoption

I think anyone that would pay to take a test called the "Britishness Test" probably deserved to lose the money.
