And should they be in different locations in the house, or can they be all in one room?

forget the litter trays. Sprinke cat little all over your floor to a depth of 2 cm. Turn your house into a giant litter tray.

1 litter box per cat is the general rule, sometimes they are picky and if there is only one litterbox they might start going on the floor. Yes they can all be in one room but make sure it is a very enclosed space they prefer it more private. I have 4 cats and 4 litter boxes trust me you want more than one!! Also if there is a spot in your house where they go on the floor sometimes that is where they want their boxes to be. They also really like to have the boxes in different spots around the house but they will still use them if they are all in one spot.

I would start with two boxes. Try putting them in different locations if you have the room. The cats may each make a preference to a particular box and you might not have to clean it as often. But, like others have said, a clean box isn't a smelly box. Personally, I would like to have more than 2 bathrooms. Movie stars do, and I look like Tom Selleck so I deserve more. But I digress...

It depends on the cats. I have three cats and two boxes. The boxes are side by side because of limited room. It works fine for me and mine. Most likely even if the boxes are in the same room it should work for you. If it seems like it isn't working try moving the boxes farther apart. If it still doesn't work then maybe you can add a box.

P.S. One of my boxes is industrial sized and I clean them every day.

The real question is how frequently do you want to scoop poop. Having said that, I'd recommend two (2) litterboxes, covered, in the same room near each other. Scoop once a day.

Upside is that with two (2) litterboxes, you can leave your cats at home unattended for several days without coming home to 'gifts' in your shoes.

Seven (7) cats, two (2) boxes and 3-day week-ends are do-able.

Enjoy.

I have 2 boxes in the same room for 3 cats. I make sure the boxes are cleaned regularly and so far (about 3 years) have had no problems. Good kitties! :)

I have one adult cat and three 9 week old kittens. I have two boxes and clean them everyday to every other. (Since kittens are getting older, it has been everyday) I keep the boxes in the same area. I have no cat smell at all. So with three cats, I vote 2 boxes and clean them at least every other day :)

I have three indoor cats (lol, small world!). I have one large litter box for them, and they're fine. You just have to clean it about every week, and change the litter about every 2 weeks.
