I've recently started as charity fundraiser working on the many streets across the UK. Some people are friendly and polite; others are rude and self-absorbed. But, I would like to know what your view is on charity fundraisers - what do you like/hate about them?

i don't mind them in fact i think its a good way to get a message out but many people cant or find it hard to handle complete strangers walking up to them trying to talk to them.

This should not be allowed. Also many of these people are doing it as a paid job. Afraid only in very exceptional circumstances do I now give any donations on the street, simply because I am usually unsure the percentage that is being passed to the charity. I prefer to chose the charities I wish to donate to and do it through Direct Debit monthly. Certainly would never give my bank details to street fundraisers and wouldn't advise anyone else to do so either.

I don't think that people are being rude when they don't respond to you. You're not a friend starting a conversation; you are a stranger initiating contact to ask for a donation. So don't take it personally because the social rules of friendship don't apply. People don't have to smile at you. And yes, people can be self absorbed; maybe they've got something to worry about.
We're told to be careful of our bank details so its just not reasonable to stop people in the street and ask for them. Charities should hand over a leaflet explaining who they are and what they do, and a standing order form and let you fill it in yourself at home.

I hate the pushy ones.
Make a sign for where every you are going to situate yourself and if possible make some small leaflets explaining more about the charity you are collecting for. Read up on on the charity, if you do not know a great deal about them as someone may ask how their donation will be spent.

Charity Fundraisers are the ultimate. You continue doing good things like that, always keep your mind, heart, compassion open to do good works and indeed God will bless you as well.

The fact is that when I'm walking through town I don't liked to be bothered. In Birmingham you don't just get one person asking for money, you get one and then you walk up a bit and get another person. It's nothing against you. It doesn't feel like it's different charities it just seems like the same person asking for money.

everyone thinks you are bum trying to get money for something other than what you say you are. like drugs, booze crazy hookers that sort of thing. i lived in pittsburgh, pa right when the 9/11 attacks happened and there were firefighters in the street collecting donations for their fallen brothers in NYC. no one contributed bcuz they thought it was a scam. and this was like two days after the attacks took place!

I think it's great they're there but the shouldn't ask for donations, I believe people will give if they wish to without being prompted.

Carry on the good work.
