No, they are not. But many do speak some Spanish. Those that have retired there live in communities where there are many Americans. Most of the Mexican residents speak English especially those in the stores, cantinas and hotels. English is required in many Mexican schools - and people can usually understand the needs and wants of their foreign visitors.

Last I heard the numbers of Americans living in Mexico was less than 360,000, not one million. And, of those living there, none are poor, or even middle class. As for the retirees, they can only live there for a limited amount of time, and they are not poor, nor middle class American citizens. When your rich you can afford to live anywhere. Most Americans are in severe debt, live beyond their earnings, and this is the American middle class, then there is the poor. The wealthy would like to hide the poverty in America to make our country look better, but it is all an illusion. Personally, if I were to travel to another country, I would study the language first so that I could get around, and if I want to be a citizen then I should be required to learn the language.

It has been my expereince that many of the American ex pats. that live in Mexico have at least a working ability with Spanish. Obviously they like the scene so they would be considered, amable: friendly to those Mexicanos and Mexico.
Most Mexicanos will bend over backwards to help one learn or speak Spanish. For the most part they are very, lovely people. This used to be true in the USA. Before repect for our borders was violated. In my humble opinion: Illegal aliens from Mexico, need to be taught respect for USA law and order. Mexicans general orientation is like that of an ignorant child, who doesn't know any better. They need to be returned to Mexico and if they so desire, apply for legal entry. This will do a huge amount of good for them (and for us, US Americans) in that they will learn we are a nation of Law and Order (unlike Mexico).
When they do return legally, should they choose, they will show respect for us and our country, and we will show them the proper support by helping them to learn and speak and use English to enjoy their time here. Either as guests or new citizens.

We exempt the elderly from the language requirement here, too.

The Americans there, so far as I know, are all there in compliance with Mexico's immigration laws, which include lack of need of funded public services. Even so, they have few rights there. In fact today:

"The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City urged Americans 'to avoid downtown Mexico City and surrounding areas" during the protest, noting foreigners are prohibited by law from political activity here and that "even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.'"

Tell you what. Let's make our laws just like theirs and enforce them as strictly as they do theirs. Then everything will be fair.

As one of those you have mentioned, I do speak Spanish and have since the age of 13 or so. Living now in Puerto Vallarta, Jalicso and having traveled extensively in Mexico I find that the majority of retirees do not speak the language fluently. They tend to settle in areas where the service people speak enough english to attend to their needs. It's the age old attitude of the the US that everone should speak English.

i understand an excellent style of people residing in Mexico that doesn't communicate Spanish because they're lazy. They dangle out with English audio equipment. Is fantastically very equivalent to the following, absolutely everyone communicate oftentimes their first language and dangle out with people from their own nationality. also, those who've turning out to be little ones, deliver them to English college, their little ones do not study Spanish. yet is not in simple terms people, is all nationalities.

I would imagine they have learned it, by now. I'm personally against people retiring in Mexico, I don't think it's a good idea. I would never do it...I don't ever anticipate needing a house-servant etc...

Do they have to be? As far as I know, they're retired people, they don't work, they don't defraud the Mexican system, they don't demand welfare, they don't demand schooling ... they are net contributors to the Mexican economy ... I'm sure they've picked up enough Spanish to get along ... and I'm goddamn sure nobody prints any forms in English for them ...
